Haha T&S needs to weigh in on Miss D's birth weight.

My 9 lb 2 oz monster fit into newborn for 2 weeks. After that she followed my in laws predictions of her wearing the size for double her age...

6 months old? 12 month clothes. 18 months old? We are about to jump into 3T

All three of our stooges were smallish babies. DD2 didn't hit 20 lbs. until after she was 2 y/o. Kiddo was (and still is) very small for her age. She's just finally no longer able to fit into her favorite 4T jeans. She's 13 1/2 y/o. Yes, she could still wear toddler clothes until she was a teenager.

I'd always wondered who the hell could fit into the 00 or XXS shit at department stores. Now I know.

My little girl was 9.5 lbs at birth and skipped the newborn size. (We even had to bring diapers from home because the hospital only had newborn ones, and they didn't fit!) I'd plan on 0-3 month sizing for the jacket. She was in that for about a month. My son was born at 8 lbs and was in newborn size for about 3 weeks, too.

Oh, yeah -- more like knee-length shorts. She's not quite 5' yet.

I'm definitely making a Baby Sophisticate too! I had leftover Cascade 128 superwash from another project and decided it NEEDED to be something baby, now. I love how fast baby garments knit up! I've done the hood and most of the yoke already, and I just started evening.

I would say to make the coat in 0-3 and roll the sleeves! FWIW, DD was a Nov. baby, and didn't have any kind of jacket for the first winter in the Midwest (NTSB and APA advise against use of coats while in the carseat, so we just kept DD in a onesie and PJs with blankets over her).

I'd recommend you make the coat for next year when the baby is wearing 12-18 mo. You will get a lot more use out of the coat then when the baby is actually able to wear it. Also, tiny newborns really hate being stuffed into little jackets and stuff like that. And dressing them is sort of like trying to catch all the arms of an octopus in a basket ball net. They have slinky arms and legs. For a newborn, I suggest you knit a hat, booties, baby mittens, blanket, and maybe a diaper cover for pictures.

This is the plan, for the most part, with the exception of one or two little items just for fun. It doesn't get cold enough in LA for too much wool anyway. I can knock these projects out pretty quickly, especially when my husband is at the hospital working all day and night, so I've got plenty of time to knit hats, booties, and mittens galore, plus a few blankets.

Have you done the baby surprise jacket? I loved that one on my daughter. The sleeves are shorter than a regular sweater which is nice. But done up in super wash sock yarn, it is so lovely.

My very average just over 7 pounder fit in preemie sizes perfectly for the first week or so, while newborn swam on him. My 75th %ile 8.25 pounder couldn't squeeze into preemie, but she was just right for newborn, at least for a few days.

All three of our stooges were smallish (ranging from 6 lbs. 1 oz. to 6 lbs. 13 oz.) and only the smallest ever fit into preemie stuff. Even then it was only for a very short time. The newborn or 0-3 months stuff fit for much, MUCH longer.

If by some freak miracle we need preemie sizes, I will send my sister to the store for them after his birth! I have like 5 newborn outfits. Lots of 0-3 and 3-6. As a point of reference, I was 9lbs, 15.5oz at birth, and DH was 8lbs, 6oz.

Our 7lb, 7 oz baby (very average) was so long at birth that 0-3 fit on length (for about a week) but was swimming on her in width. Daddy's tall (6'8'') so that's not surprising. She's now in the 50th percentile. So it's not just weight that determines fit, it's also length and girth? (Is that the proper term, girth? I just laughed at that one)

True...when I said my firstborn was average, I mean he was pretty much 50th %ile across the board. Except head size...kid had a hyooge noggin. His sister was plumper, she was 75th for weight but I think 50th for length.
