Gosh, what HAVEN'T I done wrong?

One of my boys' (the two oldest) favorite meals while DH was a resident was generic mac-n-cheese mixed with cut up hot dogs and (cooked) frozen peas. A gourmet touch was when I added a couple of pieces of torn up American cheese to the mix, instead of just relying on the powdered stuff for flavor. I cringe just thinking about the additives and fillers that tasty treat contained. I have been known to let my kids eat WAY too much junk food, definitely.

I have lost my temper more times than I want to count, with all of them, but particularly the oldest. I have projected my own issues onto them too many times and cared more about what people thought of me when they observed my kids than what my kids perceived I thought about them. I have laughed at the wrong times, been too critical, not sympathetic enough, not willing to listen, too busy to read or play with them, and DEFINITELY not patient enough. I haven't cherished their babyhoods and childhoods nearly well enough. I have gotten better with time and seem to have found some equilibrium with my youngest.....but I still have my moments.

The silver lining is that kids respond to heartfelt apologies, and amazingly, (at least so far!) don't seem to be quick to hold grudges.

It is HARD being a parent. Really, really, really hard....to the point where if someone tried to tell you how hard it was before you had kids, you would conclude that they had serious issues and wouldn't believe what they said. But I can't imagine who I would be if I hadn't become a mom, and I wouldn't change a thing.
