Toddler Struggles

Because she is behind on walking. Just started about 2 weeks ago. And until yesterday was still mostly crawling. The girl is stubborn. They consider it behavioral. And I am partiality to blame because I would hold and carry her a lot... because she would cry until I picked her up.

Did they tell you that it was your fault? That kinda rubs me the wrong way...
I hope that's not the case, so I can confidently tell you that nurturing your child and affirming her by picking her up is not a bad thing at all.

I think we are hitting the terrible twos early. Before tantrums were because she couldn't communicate. In the last week it has been sheer stubbornness and toddler assholishness. I spent 15 minutes in a 100 degree target parking lot convincing her to let me take her out of the cart and into the car. She wanted me to drive away. I know this because I got in the car and pulled one foot forward and she waved bye bye.

My kid screamed MORE during the track breaks in a f-Inge Raffi CD all the way to my OB appt this AM. It's like a need a Raffi remix. And I HATE Raffi. DH bought it for her as a memory from his childhood but of course I'm the only one who drives her around.

I'm shocked they didn't tell me that my BP was super high.

Haha, we totally listened to Raffi as children. My 19 year old brother has bananaphone on his iPod

No no. They didn't say it was my fault. But after the pt got involved it made me realize how much I carry her in and out of the car and hold her in general. (Obviously it's faster and easier but it never occurred to me that it was not best for HER development.)

It just made me realize what is easiest is not always best.

Oddly enough (knocking on wood) Minnie has been almost exclusively walking since Thursday and has been so happy and cooperative for a week now!

And I think your tips have really minimized my frustrations!

Today, I felt like I had a small victory. We were walking home from the park and it was a MILLION degrees. DD walked a while and then wanted to be carried. I carried her for a little while but after 5 minutes, I just couldn't walk, hold her, and push the stroller. I asked her to walk or get in the stroller. Complete meltdown. My inclination was to stuff her in the stroller and get out of the heat. Instead I just hugged and her and let her cry for a little bit. We say down and she calmed down and she eventually agreed to walk. I think she was just so hot and frustrated and why couldn't mama carry her??? I'm not naturally super patient but I feel like it worked to just let her deal with her emotions a little bit. Not that I won't sometimes just enforce my will bc I have to but I'm really working on not enforcing my will when I don't have to and also seeing things from her perspective.

I guess trying to be a little more of a "yes" mom if anyone has read that article.

This is pretty key to my parenting, and I find I really like the people I'm raising. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Yeah, it is definitely not my natural style but I am working on it. And it definitely diffused the tension better than forcing her into the stroller.

DS used to listen to the Baby Beluga album a lot -- now, he requests Queen and Steve Miller Band. Obviously, I could only take so much of Raffi...
