  • In the vein of those books, I've had Hillbilly Elegy on hold at the library for weeks now. Angie recently read it...I wonder how she liked it. I would tag her, but I cannot spell her IMSN name for crap

    • Stab in the dark... @Scheherezade? LOL. Some of my family members read that one too. I think along with Strangers in their Own Land it could be a great angle on this kind of investigation about racial and political identities in the US. I think I might put a bunch of stuff on hold at the library and see what comes up first.

I can only sometimes get into fiction, these days. But when I'm motivated to investigate a nonfiction topic, I delve deep. (Sadly I usually peter out within a couple of months. So we'll see where I get with these. MLK is an amazing author so that was a good read, and a quick skim of Generations shows that the parts that refer to my generation and the "Cycle" we're in, are scarily prophetic. I'm looking forward to seeing the echoes of this era going back through history, and seeing how the authors' predictions from 1991 continue to unfold.)

Seems to be working fine on my desktop - how long has this been happening? What browser are you using? Does the spacebar work when you just reply to a thread without quoting (clicking on the "reply to thread" button, not just hitting quick reply on a post)? Does it still do it with a different browser or if you restart the browser you've been using?

            • Chrome. And works fine if I don't quote. Haven't checked on other browsers yet (on phone now) but will check and report back!

This happens to me, too (when quoting), but only if I delete what I type then try to type again. Does that make sense? Like, if I type a sentence, then delete the last word, then when I started typing again I can't put spaces in. I'm also using Chrome.

I have this problem too. I usually copy a space and paste it once, then it works again. So weird.

Found a bug thread about this. Apparently something to do with the latest Chrome version, but not for everyone? There are some suggestions for workarounds in this thread:

                      • After reading Chimamanda Ngozi Adici's piece in the New Yorker I've finished reading through her published works. Picked up Atwood's new Hag-Seed and now am about done with the first of Ferrante's Neapolitan series. Yay! No longer too tired to read.

I'm on a female author kick. Any recommendations?

If you're OK with speculative fiction: Octavia Butler, especially Wild Seed. Anything by Ursula K LeGuin. I love everything by Lois McMaster Bujold, Connie Willis, or Sarah Zettel. Ariana Franklin's "Mistress of the art of death" series is good. Female doctor from Italy in 10th century England solving murders with her forensic skills.
