Born to Buy: The Commercialized Child and the new Consumer Culture

    Juliet Schor

I love this author. Her other titles include "The Overspent American" and "The Overworked American". I know that every generation fears for the well being of their children and the seemingly increase in danger, but this book is explosive. I had no idea of the depth of exploitation of children in this country, including some questionable alliances between big business and schools, girl scouts, boys and girls club, etc. I was overwhelmed by the facts and statistics that Schor cited. Essentially, she indicts the present state of consumer culture as the culprit for turning our children into "oversexed, status-obsessed, attention-deficit little consumers" which erodes their moral code and self esteem.

I could not put this book down. This should be mandatory reading for both high school students and parents and just citizens in general.
