  • Kid book: My Side of the Mountain by Jean George

Outstanding!! This was written in 1959. I've been reading this out loud to the kids on our rainy afternoons. It is the story of a young teen (?) boy in the 1950's who runs away to live on the abandoned family land in the Catskill Mountains. He succeeds and imparts all types of survivalist info and natural history in his first person account. It was great. The only questionable part was the boy's father telling him to go ahead and run away (we told our kids that was a bad idea ). Otherwise, it is fascinating. There is lots of hunting and skinning though -- so if your kids are sensitive to that it might freak them out. Still, everything is done for the boys survival and that part isn't excessive. My kids have been spellbound and I enjoyed it too!! (A decent reader could do this on their own but it was fun to share.)
