  • The Wrestler

The husband is a pretty big Aronofsky fan, so when he heard about The Wrestler he was really excited to go see it. I haven't kept up with wrestling at all but during elementary school when all my guy friends were crazy for it, I knew the characters and had watched a few of the WWF shows. I was interested enough in the culture to want to see what kind of a take Aronofsky was going to have on it.

We both came away very impressed. I loved the story so much. You leave totally feeling like Mickey Rourke actually is Ram Jam. There were so many beautiful, quiet moments in the film where you just have to look at the characters and the expressions they're making and really try to imagine what these people must be thinking and feeling. It made me realize that so many professional athletes from different disciplines really aren't prepared for a life after their careers end.

There were funny moments too, particularly Ram Jam's time in the Deli.

One of my favourite aspects of the movie was the parallel between Marisa Tomei's job as a stripper and Rourke's persona as a wrestler. Some of these scenes are shot really well and demonstrate the similarities in these two completely different arenas of (mostly) male entertainment.

Anyway, I really loved it and can't wait to get it when it comes out. I rarely watch movies twice but I will definitely be watching The Wrestler again.
