I can't wait for ACA to be replaced. We have massive premiums now and deductibles so high that we can't go to the doctor. I'm all for keeping the pre-existing conditions and opening up competition across state lines. Oh. And regulate the shit out of the pharm industry while allowing Americans to buy drugs from Canada. ACA failed. I hope the replacement makes healthcare easily affordable for all Americans.

Now that I've quit my job, we are in the "squeezed" group that makes too much for medicare + subsidies and has seen premiums rise--~$100/month per year over the past two years. Thankfully the increase didn't keep up the trend this year, but they did add a $100/month fee to anyone covering a spouse that had access to insurance through their own job, so I'm wondering if that was the tradeoff. The employer provided medical and dental we have through the hospital has premiums that make up 20% of our take home pay (~15%) of gross. This plan is WAY better than anything we could get through the marketplace because it covers so much compared (lots of copays vs high deductible like most of the marketplace plans) so I'm thanking my lucky stars we have this vs having to spend more per month on a plan that would cover next to nothing. I would be a lot more upset if our current income was going to be static for the foreseeable future.

ETA: I just saw on my husband's paycheck that the employer cost of the plan, is ~$1300/month. It probably is comparable to a ~$2000/month premium plan on the open market, based on what I've seen. If we were self-employed...boy.

I understand why the true (not upper--but even some of them) middle class is pissed. I think it is fair to say that in giving insurance to the poor and those with pre-existing conditions, we took away actual access to care from the middle class and squeezed them financially.

I think the whole conversation should be framed more around whether or not care is actually affordable vs how many people are insured. A high premium, high deductible plan is almost useless to someone who needs care, but cant pay the deductible. It's catastrophic insurance at that point. The improvement is someone can now get access to care in a hospital in the case of an urgent medical situation, where they may have been turned away before. They are still going to go bankrupt trying to pay, though. Or just not pay at all. And if it is anything outpatient, they still cant access the care they need. Providers are starting to wise up and make you pay the cost of your deductible (+ sometimes the estimated copay) before they will provide care, or even schedule you. That was the case with both of my last two childrens' births.

That being said, I don't have a better answer.

I know several people who sign up every Jan, pay 1 month, make all their appointments in the first 6 weeks and then never pay again. They can't afford it and they don't care if they stiff the doctor.

What is this about pregnancy/domestic violence being a pre existing condition? I feel like I've seen a million posts but news sources don't seem to be reporting this the way Facebook is...

There isn't one bc they rushed the bill through before it was done! No cost numbers either! It doesn't matter the Senate is going to write their own, it's an empty victory for now.
