  • Digital camera recommendations

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but here goes:

I'm in the market for a new digital camera as my old one is not functioning properly anymore. I'd like a point-and-shoot and an "ultra-compact" one. Let me know if you have had any good/bad/ugly experiences with a particular camera.

Right now, I'm leaning toward a Canon SD850 (just to give you an idea of the style).

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 and I realy love it.

    I think it's a real bargain....

It's only got 6 MP, but I realy don't need more for my purposes....the best feature is it's 12X zoom...It is fabulous! I opted for Zoom over Mexapixel.

I love love my Sony Cybershot. We have last year's version, the W100. The new W90 is basically the same camera except it has face detection. I can only imagine how awesome the newer version is because we have taken some pretty awesome well focused non blurred pictures with our version.

I also have a Panasonic Lumix and love it. You can't beat the zoom for the size.

Thanks for the link. The W series was not included in the recall.

I have a Kodak Z740. I'm not all that impressed with it. It doesn't take crystal-clear pictures. It does have some nice features, but what good are they if the pictures are always slightly blurry? The flash leaves a half-moon shadow on close-ups. The flash is completely useless with the zoom. I got the camera dock that recharges the batteries and prints 4x6 pictures, and the printer part has never worked properly since day 1. Also, the software that came with the camera is nice and useful, but doesn't always work seamlessly with my computer. I know it's a software problem because it did the same things on my last computer, too. The software is not as user friendly as it should be. Wow, this is a pretty bad review of the Z740.

My older kids both have a Kodak C533 (I think). It is a smaller camera with fewer bells and whistles. However, the pictures on that camera are very clear. It's also less bulky.

My next camera will be a Canon.

I have the Canon SD800 IS which is probably the generation before yours and I LOVE it! It is compact enough that I can stick it in my little purse, has GREAT battery life and takes FABULOUS pictures IMO.

Hey, Heidi....do you know how to compress the digital videos into avi files and keep the sound? I've been driving myself crazy because I make a great 2 minute video of something and the file is so huge that I can't upload it to photobucket or youtube.....and I can't compress it without losing sound...

Sorry, Kris...that question is so over my head that I didn't realize it couldn't be done! I just tried to upload a video to Photobucket and it didn't work. I rarely use this camera to make videos.

                        Kris,

What format does your camera take video in? Quicktime?

Anyway, your best bet would be to actually but a converter....

Take a look at quicktime PRO (30 bucks I think) It should do everything you want.

First, I LOVE Canons. Love, love, love. I have a Canon A620, but it isn't as compact as the one you posted. Takes amazing photos though.

In my photography community, the Canon point and shoot cameras are pretty well respected.

I guess any recommendations would have to come with a little more information - what are you going to use this for? What are you shooting?

Anyway, check out http://www.prestigecamera.com. They have great deals!!

                            Thanks for the opinions, everyone!

Mostly, I'll be using the camera for normal stuff, like photographing friends & family at events & our dog

But, I would be interested in doing more macro shots, which is something that my current camera doesn't do. So, really, I'd like a camera that is pretty versatile.

I have heard good things about Canons, but I will probably look at some other brands as well to compare. I can't wait to go camera shopping this weekend!

I have a program that will do this really, really easily, and I have the install file, but the file is probably too big to e-mail - 46MB. If you can think of a way, other than my burning a CD and snail mailing it to you for me to get you the file, I will give it to you. It is AVS Video Converter is the name of the program. Anyway, maybe I could IM it to you? Do you have any IM software? I don't have room for the file on any of my websites.
