That is what it is here today too, school is canceled again.

They don't call it wind chill here, they call it "real feel" but I still say wind chill.

-17 w/ -32 windchill here today. The good news is that my husband spent the past seven days driving around WI, MN, and MI in a rental car (which he ran off the road twice, once hitting a pole and cracking the bumper! ) and as of late last night he's home safe and sound! I'm not usually a worrier, but with the weather and the fender benders and that plane crash yesterday, am I glad to have him back in one piece this time!

So, first, yesterday the ol' van wouldn't start - so I walked and waited and took 2 buses to get to work. We had less than 50% attendance. I was so angry, I was physically ill.

But, DH picked me up from work and was really nice and stuff.

So this morning, he tried to start it and move it into the garage...nothin'
So about 10 minutes ago I tried to do the same thing...nothin'

I'm so angry...but all I can seem to think about is this song we used to sing in German class "Kaput, kaput, mein Auto ist kaput!"

I am counting down the days until we can have two garage spaces again (residency).

Question for all of you who live in these colder climates - how's the pothole situation where you live? Chicago - SUCKS the big one. I'm just curious how things are elsewhere (PNW, MN)

Dh and I were in Seattle recently, and there were HUGE potholes there. It's been a bad year.

The streets are much better (than in Chicago) in WA and OR to begin with. Of course, the weather isn't as crazy as it is here.

              Re: -51 wind chill

Most of my kids had off for a teacher inservice workshop, but Andrew's school was canceled again. Apparently, yesterday there were some districts that didn't close and the biodiesel fuel in the fuel lines causes problems...there were children stranded in the buses with no heat, etc. Crazy!!!

What cracks me up is that there are some old timers here that are all "I walked 10 miles to school with -60 with the wind chill, barefoot, uphill...what's wrong with people?"

                  They close school? For cold?

When I was a kid in Alaska the only concession to cold was that if it was below 0, you got to stand inside waiting for the morning bell to ring instead of staying out on the playground.

LOL Alison! Not a native Alaskan, but a native Clevelander here, and I think it's pretty nutty here too. Get this: the kids have indoor recess if there is SNOW ON THE BLACKTOP. Just snow. Not horrible winds, not snow falling down / blizzard conditions .... just snow on the blacktop. And they have indoor recess if it's under 40?? (maybe 35, but I think 40).

                      Re: -51 wind chill

Last night it was cold enough that I hung a blanket up to block off the front room in our apartment and closed the heat vent in that room nearly all the way. There is a NOTICABLE difference between the warm and cold sides of the blanket...

It always cracked me up living in Portland and seeing how poorly the city as a whole handled wintry weather.

But where you are, don't they get conditions like that a LOT? Do the boys EVER have recess in the winter? (We always longed for when it would get cold enough to flood the ice rink, then we could bring our skates to school!)

We're warmer than Cleveland, and snow is much more infrequent. But yes, they have a LOT of indoor recess. At the end of the year I buy a few games for the teacher to replenish the ones the kids have destroyed.

As I wake up here this morning it is PLUS 17, 42 degrees warmer then it was on Thursday morning. The windchill is even above 0.

I just checked and we are above zero today and currently the wind chill is hovering right around 0. Quite an improvement. DH's car didn't start last night but he was able to get a ride home from someone else. Luckily, our neighbor is a nurse at the same hospital and he got a ride in with her this morning. Hopefully the warmer temps will allow it to start when he is done.
