Do we have any collectors in this group? My mom is the ultimate gatherer. She collects antiques of all kinds, head vases, bird figurines, art, cut crystal, jewelry.... I get the bug now and then. Lately, it's vintage costume rhinestone/enamel brooches. You?

What Do You Collect?

The very idea of collecting something intentionally makes me itch. I hate knick-knacks and I hate clutter. BUT, I do think there's a big difference between knick-knacks and more functional collections of things you use regularly. You might say that I collect books and pottery, because I love buying both and hate to get rid of either. I have more mugs than we can possibly need -- but we do use a LOT and we cycle through them all eventually -- and although I do cull the book collection every time we move, I keep any of those that I really loved, might like to loan to a friend, or would want my future kids to have access to. And that's a fairly big list. I do actually have a list of books in progress that I would like to buy to build the perfect bookshelf for my future kid, beginning with young children's books and bridging all the way up to my own collection. My intent is to have a separate bookshelf with the youngest books closest to the bottom and the young adult to adult up at the top, so they can reach them as they grow. I believe that just having them around and accessible will help to instill a culture of reading in our family, as it did for me.Wife of PGY-4 (of 6), cat herder, and mom to a sassy-pants four-nager.

I had TONS of silly collections growing up. Coins, stickers, pencils (like the fancy, sparkly ones the dentist always handed out), marbles, POGs (when those were in). Now, I can't say I collect anything really. I also can't stand clutter. If it hasn't been used in a year, I don't like it around.PA and wife of a PGY2 in neurosurgery. Moving every 4 years has destroyed my inclination to collect things. We used to collect books, but when we got Kindles and had babies, the books went to Goodwill to free up space. I still miss seeing the bookshelves, but the past couple moves have made me grateful for technology. When I was little, I started a lot of collections, but was never serious about any of them: stamps, coins, spoons for states I've visited, stickers, etc.
I guess you could say I collect pictures. I keep mine digitally, but I've also gotten albums from MIL and DH's grandmother. Someday I'll see if I can borrow my parents' albums to scan so I can have copies.Laurie

I had a thing for knick-knacks and tchotchkes when I was young, but clutter is anathema to my husband. I guess years of having to answer "How will you use it, why do you need it, and where will you put it?" about every purchase can diminish the desire to collect stuff.
I do love antique stores though, and I would absolutely love to know or just care enough about a narrow type of item to have an excuse to go looking for it in all the antique stores I pass! The only thing I currently look for in antique stores is spinning wheels, but even if I find a good one I can't take it home, LOL. I do need some decorative glass pieces to display pebbles and beach glass, and I keep meaning to research categories like Depression glass and milk glass so I can narrow my focus so something that looks cool and has neat history to boot. It'd be fun to have a few pieces all around the house doing mundane jobs but having a common thread.Alison

We collect fridge magnets and buy something locally made from places we visit. Not everywhere but if it's somewhere we know we're unlikely to visit again. I hate clutter so I keep that in mind.
I have quite a book collection, mostly classics.
I'm also building up a collection of my own paintings because I don't want to part with them lol.Student and Mom to an Oct 2013 boy
