Hi! I just found this site tonight and I am really excited about meeting new people. My husband is a first year medical student - any of you remember those days?!? Looking forward to getting to know everyone! ~ Amy

My husband is a student at UHS - the University of Health Sciences. He has been a student as long as we have been married so this is not too new to me. It's funny - I don't even think about him being a doctor because it is so far away! All I can say is I can't wait until he is a second year just so we feel like we're gettng somewhere! Has anyone been watching that Hopkins 24/7 show? The last episone aired yesterday - I'm going to miss it! It really gave some good insight to how things are!

That's so funny. I don't think of my husband as a doctor either...and he is finishing up his FELLOWSHIP and is already board certified in internal medicine.
Something that left me during my husband's training was the "awe" of physicians. I have met so many over the years and have come to see that they are truly only human... I used to sort of have this idea that doctors were somehow "better" or "smarter" than the rest of us...after years of mingling and going to drug dinners, etc....I have to say that for the most part, they are just regular people who chose medicine as a career. They all put their pants on one leg at at time, make mistakes and have problems...just like everyone else.

We are familiar with Kirksville - UHS is University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, Missouri. We were invited to interview in Kirksville and we had heard great things about that school but had already accepted at UHS. How are you liking small town life in Kirksville, if that's where you are?

Kansas City is okay- we feel more at home in the West and will eventually return there but for a place to be for school, it's not bad. I would definately say UHS is a family friendly place. As a matter of fact, they emphasized in the beginning of the program that family should be your #1 priority and that meant a lot to us. They also have a program for spouses and significant others that seems to be good. We are living in the suburbs and I managed to find a great job in the same suburbs so life is pretty nice. We are thinking of trying to do rotations in Washington State so we may only be here 2 years which is definately a plus. We'll see... Anyone else a new med student wife? We've been married 3 1/2 years - no kids but trying.

I am orignally from Memphis, Tennessee but moved to LaGrande, Oregon after I met my husband. We were married in Portland, Oregon and after he finished his Bachlors, we moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where he got his masters degree and now we are in Kansas City. We hope to return to Oregon after he is done with school and everything else he will have to do.

I too am a new kid. My husband is also a first year. I was very happy to find this site and hope for the support of others who are in the same situation that I am. I am finding that as the weeks pass by, school is getting harder and harder for him and he is spending less and less time with me.

Eryka,
I know what you are going through and I sympathize with you. I remember what it was like when Thomas began spending more and more time with the books...it was hard...and it still is hard 7 years later...but it does get better as you both adjust to the stress and change. If you ever need to vent, feel free to post or email me.
