medical exchange programs

Hey everyone--Daniel has chosen for one of his electives a medical exchange experience in Mexico. We were looking up information last night on teh web and they are all so expensive. Does anyone know of any non profits who sponsor residents/doctors working in poverty areas of Mexico that would be willing to pay for the exchange. I would think to get a doctor down there would be hard enough without expecting someone to pay to work for free.

I'll ask Andrew when he gets home. He volunteered for a year in Sierra Leone at a medical clinic just before med school. He was also on a Dean's committee in med school for international medical outreach. He might have some leads. Exactly what are you looking for? Some organization to fund the cost of travel and living? Or other things as well?



I may not be able to get back to you until tonight, as Andrew's away for the day.

oh that would be just great--I believe he is only required to be gone for a month--it would be great if we could find something shorted but I am thinking that is probably out of the norm. Mexico would be ideal as there is a substantial hispanic population in Minneapolis believe it or not.

Thomas did 3 months in Africa...I will ask him how he did it...It sounds like a neat idea!

Well, I talked to Thomas and a couple of our DO friends on this one...here is the problem that they see. The DO degree has still not been recognized in Mexico as a medical degree...which would make it difficult for him to obtain licensure and practice their in the hospital...he couldn't actually practice as a physician!! I find that hard to swallow, personally...DoWife...do you know anything about this?
