This week, we got together with my little boy's best friend and his mom. She and I got to talking about our lives and she shared with me that her mother never sent her to school. She grew up in the UK, S. Africa, and the US and her mom just never "bothered" to send her regularly. She went for a couple of years in junior high but was unable to read or write and wasn't able to keep up with her peers emotionally. Her mother refused to let her go to school then after she turned 14, insisting that she go to work. This woman taught herself to read at the age of 17, and is raising two beautiful children. She works with her oldest child every day on his letters and numbers and insists that he take piano lessons and practice daily. She aspires to return to school someday when her children are in school so that she can get a GED, but has put her children first as her priority. The most incredible think though was that her parents divorced and she has allowed her mother to move in with her and her husband. She has found forgiveness in her heart for her mother, and I am so truly touched by this...
