My daughter was due on April 22nd. We were living in Northern Ireland at the time, and so my mom flew in a week before she was due to help me out and be there for my little boy while we were in the hospital. My husband's parents and brother had arranged to come too, and so we had a rather full house. If I am honest, I was sort of praying that she would make a late appearance because I felt uncomfortable about having so many people in the house! I wanted to try and stay at home as long as possible before going in to L + D and I felt akward about having them all around.
As luck would have it, Amanda decided to stay put! I began having mild labor pains around 2am on April 31st. My mom had already gone home , and Thomas' family was scheduled to fly back to Germany the next day . Thomas and I woke them up at about 5 am and I told them good-bye..then he took me to L+D and then picked them up and took them to the airport. (Fortunately, we had a back-up childcare plan!). The labor died off though and although I stayed admitted to hospital, I was allowed to go home for the afternoon. I could tell that I was in the early stages of labor, but things moved pretty slowly. I came back in the evening to be induced and my contractions had already started. I brought one of those big exercise balls with me to sit on and do all kinds of little "exercises" to help move the labor along, but for the most part, I would say that it sat in the corner of the room . After a long, warm bath, I went down to the delivery room.
Finny was born with vacuum delivery after 2 hours of pushing....the cord had been wrapped around her neck. After a brief scare and an initial low APGAR, she came around and did really well.
The great thing about having a baby in the UK is that they kept you for a few days until you were rested, and then for a couple of weeks after the baby was born, a midwife visited you in your home to examine you and give you any nursing/mothering advice. It was really nice!
