  • My oldest turns 10!

Jacob turned 10 today and I am still trying to figure out where the time has gone. It seems like yesterday that he was born and that scares me. They grow up WAY too fast! He is a big boy anyway being the tallest boy in his class.

He is a real sweetheart and now I am frantically trying to figure out what to do for his birthday. He wants to be a pilot when he grows up so I am going to make a jet birthday cake if I can get it to turn out right. I love Family Fun magazine to give me ideas about birthdays!!! Anyway...

Anyone have any inexpensive ideas to make his birthday memorable?! Now that I have survived Halloween, my poor brain is not coming up with anything creative.

    Robin....

I am so empathetic to you...how can he possibly have turned 10 when you are still 18 It goes by so fast, doesn't it! When andrew turned 6 last year we realized that he had already spen 1/3 of the time that he would likely live at home with us... Of course he has promised to live with me forever even when he gets married, so I do have that reassurance

As far as memorable, creative ideas....Is he having a party with friends over? I'm not in the creative mode either, so I'll have to wing it here.

You could buy those wooden airplanes from the $1 store and let all of the boys paint their own and have a flying contest when they dry...if you use that .79 a bottle paint from wal-mart and they don't goop it on, they would dry in about 20 minutes.

Get a big piece of tough off-white fabric and fabric pens (buy the kind that doesn't have to be treated in any way at all after application...that you can just throw in the washer/dryer w/o any problems!) They cost 10$ a pack at wal-mart...so you might just buy only 1 pack and let the kids take turns !!!
Wash and dry the fabric first...and let the kids write special birthday and friendship messages to him on it....You can later turn it into a blanket, pillow or whatever you decide to do...

OK...so now my brain hurts...time to go and get some more coffee!!!

      Robin,

My heart lurches when I think of my son growing up. I hope that Jacob has a wonderful birthday and that you enjoy every moment with him.

Thanks for the great ideas Kris and for your empathy Kelly! It makes me so sad to see him so grown up already!

We ended up having a VERY simple birthday for him and it is actually continuing to tonight. Yesterday was just too crazy! By the time I got all the baking done making treats for Jacob's classmates at school and then more treats for his soccer teammates and playing chauffeur to the kids activities, I was beat. We had a few disasters in that Dallin (the 2 year old) managed to turn the oven off half way thru baking the cake. By the time Russ got the present wrapped it was after 9 pm! I couldn't get the plane cake put together because of the oven fiasco SO..... we gave him his present, took a few pictures and let him play with his new CD boombox! (Is that a grown-up kid present or what?!) We ate cupcakes (leftover from soccer practice) and icecream.

Tonight we will have his fighter jet plane cake and play games. He also got some money from his grandparents so he wants to go to the store.

Am I absolutely boring or what?! We had an incredible party for him last year but this year there was just too much going on. He seems happy though! Kris, I will have to use your ideas another time. They sound like a lot of fun!
