I have enjoyed reading the posts here. My husband is a first year. Can anyone here give me some information on the Match? I know that we are a bit away from that but I have a few questions, like is it possible to get no residency?

    thanx

Hi!! I know there are a lot more qualified people to answer this question but my husband is a 3rd yr. student now and we are reading a lot of info about the match. A good website on the matching process is medschool.com. It is possible not to match with any residency but it really depends on how competitive the specialty is that your husband wants to go into and whether or not he has a back up plan. I have a friend who wants a particular program in physical rehab. med. He is ranking the one, maybe 2 programs in that field that he wants, and then he has internal med. as a back up. It is possible not to match and be able to scramble and find an open spot but you can't be too choosy. That said, most students don't have trouble matching and it is not something I'm too worried about. Of course, my husband hasn't fully decided on what he wants to specialize in so that may change! Hope this helps a little. Robin

              hi! welcome to the site!

the match is a fun & stressful time! my hub-to-be had selected surgery from nearly the time he entered med school so "all roads led to surgery" - - he did everything possible to get his transcript, cv, etc. looking spiffy for a match. then he sent his applications off (and it is at this point that you really decide where you want to go) - he picked about 3-5 places that were long shots (where he had a 50-50 chance of getting matched there), he picked about 3-5 places that would be competitive but easier than the top programs, and then he picked around 3-5 safety places where he was positive he would match if he selected them.

then, he did interviews, got a sense of what the programs were like and made his list (that remained almost identical to the one he made when sending apps off) - and he matched!

so, it's exciting -- but stressful when you are waiting to hear and you really, really, really want one particular place but it is completely out of your hands.

by the way, i have only heard of RARE instances in which someone didn't match anywhere. it is usually due to the person not applying to enough places, or places that are too competitive.

I have heard of the whole "scramble" thing as well. It almost seems to me that it would be much less stressful to just interview and then find out whether you get the job. Can it happen that you don't get your number one choice and then if your number two put you as number one that you don't get your number two either? I am clueless as to how that works. We were fortunate enough to do everything outside of the match.
