    Robin:

Name is Adrienne. (Typically don't put my name on emails!) Especially incriminating ones about my hubby's program!!

I think you and your husband are making a wise choice. There isn't a day that goes by that my husband doesn't worry about not spending enough time with our son (16 months) and children still to come. As well as wondering what it is doing to our marriage. I must admit it has not been easy and he often talks about leaving the program for those reasons. And I often ponder what life would be like if he were doing something else or if I married someone not in medicine. Don't get me wrong - I love my husband - I just hate what he does right now.

As for an alternative that allows surgery, but also a lifestyle, there are many. Anestesiology would allow him to watch surgeries. Opthomology would allow him to do laser surgery and cateracts, etc. Dermatology also has surgical aspects to it. OB/GYN obviously has surgery. And I am sure there are many more I haven't even mentioned.

Anyhow - best of luck to you, your husband and your family.

          Adrienne,

Dermatology and opthamology were two other specialties my husband considered! Both were due to the lifestyle and the ability to do procedures! You gave some good advice. I do want to tell you, though, that my son's life was saved by a pediatric neurosurgeon who practically lives at the hospital. I often wonder if his wife and children (the oldest is my son's age) ever realize what a tremendous impact their father/husband and his talents have made on my family's lives! I am so sorry for the time away from family that surgeons end up spending, but I am truly thankful that this profession exists! I just hope that my words can somehow alleviate some of the torture of having your husband gone so much!
