I didn't know that your husband was doing Peds, Kaaren...I thought he was surgery for some reason.

Are you back in the lab yet? Would you mind me emailing you sometime about some questions regarding graduate degrees? I am contemplating my next move and would love some advice or just to hear your thoughts on where you are right now with your PhD and if you would do it again...

Thanks for the comments. I would love it if my husband would choose pediatrics or family practice because of the better hours. However, I also know that it doesn't quite make him happy. He feels at home in the operating room and it shows when he walks in the door. He is doing an OB rotation now and loves the surgical aspect but the doctor told him he would be crazy to do OB because they have a worse lifestyle than general surgeons with all the on-call. So... it will be interesting to see where we end up and what we will be doing. It is nice to find a site where there are people going through the same experiences. Thanks again.

                Hi Robin!

My husband does Family Practice w/OB/Gyn.He just loves delivering babies! He has 100's of baby pics on his board at the office.he also does some surgery with that.I guess he does enough of everything to keep him happy. He's been in practice 20+years now so if you have any questions about it please feel free to ask.I wouldn't say the hours are easy tho.Depends on the call schedule and when those babies want to be born!LOL

Hi there and welcome! My husband is in family medicine and it's true, it's not that bad at all! I am willing to share our limited experiences with you, if you'd like. Also, Lynn's husband is in family medicine and also does Obstetrics. Maybe she is able to be of some help to you. As far as going into Obstetrics, my sister is in a practice with quite a few partners (I think 4) and call isn't all that bad. I guess it just all depends on how your practice is set up and how many partners you have. Well again, if I can be of any help to you, let me know!

I'm not sure where to post this, but I suppose you'll see it here... yes, I'm back in the lab for my 3d week now, and of course feel free to write me with degree questions! kseagle@yahoo.com

Yes, Tom does peds and not surgery though he was drawn to the exacting nature of surgery and doing things with his hands - but could not deal with the attitude of surgery residency or many surgeons! Now he has to be satisfied with putting in lines or doing LP's. I am truly in awe of those of you going through 7 year or longer surgery residencies! We are sustained by the fact that Tom gets to come home after his work is done post-call, ie, around 1 or 2. That means afternoons together! Anyway, Kris, feel free to write me with any questions. I'm sort of flaky about checking in here b/c of the work schedule and the fact I don't have a private desk anymore so anyone can see what i'm doing when I'm typing away here. =)
