  • Fiance' major problems ahead

    Hi all,

New to this forum. I am starting med school this fall and am engaged. My girlfriend has a year of college left and we wil live about an hour apart. We are getting married after my first year. She thinks she will be able to come and visit me each weekend and that I'll have plenty of time for her. While I still don't know exactly how hard school will be for me, I have heard horror stories. I don't know what to tell her, she knows I'll be busy, but thinks she just come and hang out with me. Would people who have had experiences with this please give me advice? I am really concerned about our relationship, because we are always together and very close. any help would be appreciated. thanks

              MS:

it will be tough. but you two will make it. i am assuming she is active in college now? if so, continue to encourage her and if not, *really* encourage her to seek out new activities, hobbies, friends - basically *anything* that will keep HER busy! i think what really helped me make it through the last few years (long distance from fiance) is that i was SOOOO busy with school and projects and travelling and what not - sometimes i just didn't have the time to think about missing him! good luck!! again as kris said, this board is an incredible resource - tell your fiancee to come and join us! i used to end up here when i was just bummed and frustrated and now rely on these gals for ongoing support!!

Hi. Welcome! I think that the best advice that I can give you is to communicate with her now. It is probably more difficult for her to really know or understand what to expect. I really struggled with that for the first year or two of my husband's training....I wanted his time off to be our time...I still grapple with that one sometimes. It can be difficult to accept that when your spouse is home that they need to study or sleep!

Start talking to her now about what your hopes are for your relationship and the fears that you are having. I think that talking about these things is the only way to get through them! Also, she sounds like she just really wants to be close to you and have time with you....perhaps if you keep that in mind you will be able to set aside a date night once a week or something just for the two of you

And hey....send her on over here for a little support

Congratulations to you on your acceptance to Medical School! You must be very excited!
