        Congratulations! That is so exciting.

My husband and I had an ultrasound today at 36 weeks to monitor for IUGR. It is so neat to see our baby's little face so clearly. We are having a girl too.

Wow, Congratulations, Crystal...that is wonderful news. Were you able to videotape it or get a picture of the baby at all? Did you guys do the romantic dinner thing or just find out there in the office?

Jenn, what is IUGR? I can't believe you are already 36 weeks...wow...just a couple of more weeks to go!

              Again.....congrats, Crystal.

Yesterday was crazy! When I scheduled my appointment they told me that it was at 345 pm (I even wrote it down!), and when I got there the front desk told me that I was almost 20 minutes late and that they might have to reschedule. This upset me because I was 20 weeks, and I made this appointment a month in advance, because that was the soonest the ultrasound clinic could see me. Well I another receptionist, who was nice, heard and saw the situation, and told me she would see if they could still see me. They were able to get me in, but the tech we had seemed annoyed with us.

We had brought a video tape with us, but were told we couldn't tape it due to liability reasons. We had to ask the tech if she could determine the gender of the baby, and before we could ask her to write down her conclusion, she blurted it out, and then rechecked to make sure again. She said "I think it's a girl (put the scanner back on my belly), yeah there's the labia, yep it's a girl!"

We still went ahead and did our envelope idea and went out to dinner, because we had our heart set on doing that. So the situation may have not been perfect, but it was memorable!

About the IUGR (I found this on one of Matt's medical websites, so it is pretty complete- it scared me, but Matt said this is comprehensive definition from mild to severe)- intrauterine growth retardation:Condition in which the fetus doesn’t grow as large as he or she should while in the uterus. These babies are small for their gestational age (SGA) and their birth weights are below the 5th percentile. IUGR can be caused by decreased blood flow to the placenta, maternal hypertension, drug use, smoking, poor weight gain, dieting during pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, alcoholism, multiple fetuses, abnormalities of the cord or placenta, prolonged pregnancy, chromosomal abnormalities, or a small placenta.
A baby with IUGR is more likely to have serious health problems and die in the newborn period. Diagnosis can be difficult before delivery, which is why it is important for the expectant mother to be weighed at each prenatal appointment and to receive an abdominal exam estimating the fetal size. The ultrasound is critical to the diagnosis of IUGR. Treatment includes better for the mother through the rest of the pregnancy, bed rest, and sometimes a C-section (these babies don’t tolerate labor well). Delivery before term is also required in some cases as these babies have an increased risk of dying in the uterus before delivery.

We were so excited that after dinner we went to Gap/Gap Kids, and they had the cutest denim jumper (3-6 mos) on sale and we bought it. We just couldn't wait!
