  • new idea for baby gift

I've started giving U.S. savings bonds as baby shower gifts. They always receive a hearty welcome from the new parents who are about to wreak havoc in their financial lives and now face the daunting task of saving for a college education. The bonds can be cashed when the parents reach the $500 minimum amount necessary to start an investment account.

Since I have become a parent, I no longer give darling little sweaters or silver baby rattles. Now I see much more value in baby wipes and savings bonds.

In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.
