Jon's not on our insurance policy so if he prescribes for me then the insurance won't pay. If that weren't the case he'd willingly prescribe for me....

(A little behind the 8 ball in responding to messages these days)

I think the reason they have it set up that way for ethic reasons. It is just like Matt can't treat me if I were to be in the hospital on one of his services or in his clinic (not that I ever would in either one of those places, that and his clinic is at the VA). Although he has said he would rather treat me some days than the 80 yr old unhealthy grumpy men that come in there.

Matt's father is a dentist, so on occasion family members will call Matt up and say I have a UTI or something or other I need a prescription. So what Matt does, is he puts a call into his dad (he can write scrips), tells him what to write it for and then his dad writes it up. We did that once for me when Matt was in med school, because it would have cost us an arm and a leg to go to the ER for a simple antibiotic scrip for a sinus infection.

Another interesting illegal thing... The Housestaff Association said that it is "illegal" for the housestaff to look up medical records (CU has an online medical records) for your family members on them.

The Army hospital is really strict (or so they appear). They questioned my husband about getting a bag of diabetes needles (10 in a bag) because I had forgotten to get them at the regular pharmacy. (They were for the cat) I'm sure it's because we don't pay for our prescriptions and they don't want us dispensing 'free meds' to the world.

My husband prescribes for me all the time, unless it is pain medication (post-partum -- need I say more?) and then he has his partner (or another resident, during residency) do it. I think it has been easier for him to do it because he is the type of doctor I would logically see (OB/GYN) if I had a complaint, since they can function as primary care docs. He hasn't ever prescribed for one of the kids -- we are kind of hands off when it comes to antibiotics for our kids -- they have to be pretty sick before we take them in, because my husband and I think they are so overprescribed to make *parents* feel better. However, there have been a few times that we both realize we waited too long to get them meds......sometimes it is so hard to tell!
