I feel like this roller coaster is getting too many turns, spirals and upside-down madness!

Let the games begin! Has he considered any "surgical specialties"? I know that there are some specialties that don't require the call schedule of the general surgeon but that do have some "surgical" interventions...I think ENT is one of them? Goes to show how much I know!!! ER could be fun (I think it is what I would choose ).

I do think that Geisinger has an anesthesiology program....I just really liked Danville. It is a really nice community to raise a family in...Thomas and I have still been considering returning there even though we have bought a home hear and are trying to settle....we didn't go back because we thought that it would be a mistake to go backwards....but we still have our computer set to tell us about the weather in Danville...

I'll be curious to hear how he decides in this process...it must be tough after only a few years of med school (and only 1 year of clinical exposure) to nail down exactly what you think you want to do for the rest of your life!

So why is he in Michigan right now?

I'll just jump in here - It sounds like you are trying to decide between surgery & anesthesia. I have to say the surgeons I know never get a normal schedule. In a surgical practice the call is always 24 hours a day with at least 2 surgeons on call. In a small group this can be intense when you are in your 40s & 50s. Trauma surgery happens at any time day or night. If it is your turn on call and a AAA comes in at 2am it can be brutal when you get older.

How about Gastroenterology? Lots of procedures, diagnostic and therapeutic, better hours and procedures=reimbursement.

              Just my 2cents.

I think we should hold a vote on what specialty he should choose and hold him to it !

                          Hi Kris,

Hubby still isn't absolutely definite. Right now were are preparing applications for both, which is a real PAIN!! He loves general surgery and is enjoying the rotation he is on right now but he worked 90 hours last week and realized that it was a short week. He is on in-house call twice this week and when he is off, all he wants to do is sleep. So he is worried that he won't see his kids at all for 5 years and with our oldest going on 10, he can't bear the thought.

On the other side... he likes the lifestyle of anesthesia and he still gets the benefits of good pay and being in the hospital setting that he likes. He doesn't enjoy the procedures quite as much because of all the pharmacology involved and it is more abstract than surgery. He is a very visual person. He is leaning very much towards anesthesia and actually, that's the way I hope he goes, as long as he likes it. I don't want him to be unhappy but I do want to have a life with him and I especially worry about the boys. There are more programs in the west for anesthesia (with general surgery he would go the D.O. route and all of the surgery residencies are from the midwest-east). With anesthesia, he would go allopathic and could stay closer to family. Anyway... all I can say is that it will be interesting to see how this year turns out. I feel like this roller coaster is getting too many turns, spirals and upside-down madness!

The hard part is that he is in Michigan right now so we are trying to make these decisions apart. I did write a rough draft of a personal statement for him to either revamp or at least give him an idea of which way to proceed. I will have to look at Geisinger again for anesthesia. I tried the other day but their site was down. I have seen the area there before and it is absolutely beautiful.

                          Thanks for asking.
