Cracking Down on Residency Programs...

I thought I'd share this with you....UF's entire Internal Med dept. has been put on probation by the accredidation committee because of their overwork of residents/fellows and limited scope of the teaching that they offer.....you know how residency programs are....they say they offer more than they DO....In a way, this is a great validation of our experience...however, the result of this is NOT that resident teaching will change or that there will be a great reduction in hours required to be worked by the residents...they have all lost the ability to moonlight...this is the only change being made as of yet....

Many of you know that especiall families with stay-at-home moms rely heavily on the moonlighting salary...and this is GONE...we received an email from friends of ours who are still there who have just lost 40% of their income...and don't know what to do....they own a house and a car and can't make their payments starting...now....

What do you guys think about this...

I think that is pretty darned crappy! I really don't think that a residency program should have ANY say in whether or not a physician moonlights. I definitely don't think cutting down on moonlighting is the way to go if a RESIDENCY PROGRAM is overworking its residents!

I know, Jennifer. Seriously, that is so lousy for the people there right now. I told Thomas we can just thank god that this didn't happen when we were there. We were really only able to survive fellowship thanks to the numerous moonlighting opportunities. What will the people do who have families?!

Sounds like they are punishing the residents. They still have to work, now they will have to find other jobs, not in medicine, paying alot less which will require more hours. This just sounds wrong. Can they legally enforce this policy?

I am rather conflicted on the topic of moonlighting. My husband hasn't been able to start doing it for whatever reason - either his rotations or you can only do it in 4th year?! something like that. He sometimes mentions that he can help us pay off some CC debt if he moonlights a couple of times but I have actually said whatever - we will pay it off somehow but I would rather have you home!!!
Now, I am saying this given that we have no kids to support, just one big hungry dog and a cat.
I guess I'm going to have to take the unpopular path on this one and say that somehow they will make it - I have frequently thought "oh my gosh, we are so poor" over the last few weeks since I am not working but THEN i realize how many families are making do with what we make right now for the rest of their lives - they don't have a guarantee that their salary will increase post-residency. So yes, some moms might have to get a job - but they will still be great mothers - and it might add some tension to life - but they will make it. They will do what they need to do to survive.
So - sorry if I'm ticking anyone off - I'm just thinking of the 'everyone else is making it' argument.
