I voted for anesthesia, but I am a bit biased though- Matt is going to do Anesthesia at University of Washington-Seattle.

I know for Matt he liked surgery, but hated the lifestyle, and he has a hand birth defect and it would have made it really hard for him to be a successful surgeon. With internal medicine even though he liked it, he didn't feel he was satified with his role. Matt was looking for something where he could actually be doing something instead of changing someone's meds every 2 weeks. He likes that anesthesia gives him the opportunity to be in the OR and doing something- as Matt likes to say- "Anesthesiologists are the internal med docs of the operating room. They have to know everything, yet they get to do something."

We have actually heard great things about the University of WA anesthesia program. There is another program in Seattle that is definitely malignant- Virginia Mason. I think Matt ranked them dead last.

Matt gave me a list of programs that he liked while interviewing- University of Utah, University of Colorado, University of Washington, University of Oregon, Dartmouth College (in Hanover, New Hampshire), University of Vermont (this program is a small one (12 residents total), if that is what you are looking for).

Here are some programs that Matt heard bad things about such as lack of funding, poor money management, overworking of the residents- firsthand experience: Yale (malignant and money problems), Bay State (associated with Tulane University), Virginia Mason (malignant program).
From the word of mouth University of California- San Francisco (malignant program), Stanford (money problems and malignant), Johns Hopkins (in a very crummy part of Baltimore and people get killed from walking from their car to the hospital).

Matt thinks that the program in Arizona might be good- he received an interview but turned it down due to being burned out from interviewing and he had pretty much made up his mind, and living in the desert didn't appeal to me.

As far as matching for PGY1, we didn't think it was that bad. Matt really wanted to do Internal Med, and was against Transitional Yr and Surgery. He tried really hard to find IM programs that accepted prelim year residents and that were either at the same location or where we wouldn't have to move too much. Russ will have to check. The ERAS made it really nice, because you can do everything electronically. The supplemental list was great because we could do a different list for each rank. How the supplemental works is they first match you with the anesthesia program and then go to your supplemental list. So with Matt he put that if he matched at Washington then he wanted to go to St. Joe's Colorado, then Univ. CO, and so forth. So it looked like this for Dartmouth, Matt's supplemental went like this 1. Univ Colorado, 2. Vermont, 3. Maine, etc. and for his #3 (Univ WA) 1. St. Joseph's Colorado 2. Univ Colorado, 3. Univ Utah.

Matt ended up matching at Washington, and then matched with the University of Colorado for PGY1. We were happy it worked out this way- less moving.

Thanks Crystal for the great top 10. I will have to send it to Russ. I think anesthesia sounds like the best route and I am getting excited about the prospect. I think the lifestyle will make all the difference for Russ too. He loves surgery but I can't imagine him being very happy never seeing his family. It is still tough for him to decide because surgery comes easily to him and he feels that he will have to work much harder with anesthesia. I think when he starts researching it more though that he will be excited about it. He is very interested in Univ. of Colorado and is still working on setting up an externship there.

Univ. of WA has a great reputation but I have also heard that it is somewhat malignant? Matt must not have thought so to rank it so highly, right? Any opinions out there of other good programs?
