you know I reread my post and the call thing I messed up! Here is what I need to correct-

Example- if Matt was on call on Monday, he would go into the hospital Monday at 5 am, he would be home at 7 am on Tuesday! (not Wednesday!) Then would have Wednesday off.

    Crystal
    (I have pregnancy brain!)
    Gas, and 4 kids

          Crystal,

you have no idea how much your last message helped!!!! Thanks!!! I am going to copy it and send it to Russ and see if we can figure out our strategy. We had heard that the univ. of utah had major turnovers so we weren't sure what to think about it. We have a lot of family there so that is a possibility but I kind of like being out of Utah right now (BYU alum here!) We needed a change and Arizona has been great and we are surprised that we like it as much as we do. We are not desert people but it is a very comfortable place to live.

Thanks for the info about Virginia Mason too. I have a friend who is thinking of applying there for anesthesia. I will tell him to beware.

I am hoping to coordinate things well enough that our internship year will either be in Arizona so we don't have to move or in the state where we stay for the anesthesia program. We are trying to limit the moving also, especially with the kids in school. I don't want them bouncing all over the place. I don't know how possible it is to set everything up like that but we will try and see what happens.

It sounds like everything worked out great for you guys. I am sure that it will be fine here too. I just need to get organized and then relax. Don't be surprised if I send you an e-mail sometime as I think of more questions. I really appreciate your help.

          Robin

To increase your chances of matching at the same location as the anesthesia program- consider transition year as well. Matt didn't even consider surgery because he hated the idea of working that much (100+ hours a week), and transition is essentially 3rd year all over again. Matt wanted some continuity, and really liked internal medicine. Most programs have a transition year at the same place.

About the Utah program, Matt thinks with this new program director from UCSF will really take the program from being middle of the road to great. There are quite a few good programs out there, you just have to find one that suites you.

When telling your friend about Virginia Mason- relay this- Matt, during his interview, talked to a resident who had 2 young children. The VM resident told Matt that if he wants to see his family to not even consider VM. That is how bad it is. Matt said because it is a private program/hospital, they have more leaway to abuse their residents and make them into cheap slave labor. Matt also said the attraction of VM is their claim that they do more regional anesthesia- not so! Other programs that Matt interviewed with did just as much and sometimes more regional anesthesia cases than VM.

I will pass more info on as I remember!

Matt is a Utah State alum, and served his mission in the Netherlands!

Crystal, at least you can blame pregnancy for errors. I didn't even notice it so where does that leave me?!!!

Thanks for the details on Univ. of Utah and Virginia Mason. I think you are right ... there are a lot of good programs out there it is just finding the best one for us. I think one of the variables that is unknown for us is the fact that Russ went the DO route and the west is still fairly skeptical as far as the residency programs go. At least, that is what we hear. We will keep our fingers crossed. We would like to stay in the west being that all of our families are out this way. Mine in Oregon and Russ' family is in Oregon, California, Idaho, Washington and Utah. He comes from a much bigger family than I do and they are a bit spread out.

Russ is considering doing a transitional year but is also looking at internal med. He would love to go surgery but why kill yourself for a year in something you aren't going into.

When did Matt start interviewing and how many programs did he apply to? We are thinking that applying to about 15 programs would give us pretty good odds. Throwing in some that are competitive and others that are a good bet.

Thanks again for all the info. The netherlands would be a "cool" place to go on a mission. Forgive my ignorance but what language did he speak there? As for us, I went to Japan and Russ went to Georgia.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply... we have been on vacation.

Matt and I went to a drug dinner last night, and one of his fellow interns is a DO who is going to be doing anesthesia at CU. He said that if Russ is interested in CU whatsoever to try really hard to get an externship set up here, because he thinks that is the only way he got in here, and to work your butt off during your away rotations. Trygve (pronounced Trig-vah) said that if Russ wants any advice that he would be happy to talk to him- trygve.hutton@uchsc.edu. He said it is possible to get into anesthesia and be a DO- he is proof.

After talking to Matt's uncle (he did anesthesia) and hearing through the intern grapevine- transition is the way to go, if you want to have a life.

Matt started interviewing in November, and was done by February. Matt applied to ALOT of programs. If memory serves correctly, he applied to about 25 anesthesia programs, and about 27 internal medicine programs, and received out of the 25 anes. programs, received 25 interviews, and for IM 25 interviews. He didn't interview everywhere he received an interview- he interviewed at about 20 programs (anesthesia and IM). He had probably 25-30 total interviews (IM & anesthesia) lined up, but during one 2 week trip to the east, he started getting sick of interviewing and realized "I really don't want to live in such and such place. I will cancel my interview." and by the end of January he was REALLY sick of interviewing, and ended up canceling interviews he had scheduled in the beginning of Feb in Arizona and New Mexico.
