Thanks for the pep talks! I really need it because I am so STRESSED! This match process is a little too much for me I think and we have not heard from many programs which is making me nervous! I have decided to boycot Student Doctor Network because I keep reading horror stories about how all the interview slots are full and, of course, this year anesthesia has become extremely competitive which hurts being that my husband is a DO and trying to go the allopathic route. At this point, I am just hoping he matches at all!

Crystal, thanks for the input about Oregon. We were really surprised to get an interview there and we are very happy about that. We applied to most of the programs in the western U.S. (only one in California). We went as far east as Iowa. Russ really wants to stay closer to family, more than me. He is the homebody of our family.

We have a few interviews and we got our first rejection e-mail from Colorado so I guess we won't be heading out your way Crystal. The key there was not being able to get the timing right to do an externship there. Russ' friend has an interview but he also did a rotation there. We have not heard from many of the programs at all and I think Russ is going to start calling.

I will be very glad when this is all over. I am a planner and this drives me crazy not being in control of my destiny. Please, keep the pep talks coming. I really do appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Robin

I am so glad that Rick's choices were limited (military medical school=military residency!) We only had four possibilities and he was able to interview during his rotations. Whew. The civilians entering residency through the military program have to apply to both- what a drag!

Good luck. It made me crazy waiting to hear which one of the four- I can't imagine any more than that!

Jenn - I have been totally jealous of my friends with military husbands. They know where they are going already and the fewer choices would be nice in a lot of ways.

Of course, with only a few interviews scheduled so far, we may be limited in our choices too. That has some pluses in that we don't have to spend as much money (that we don't have) on traveling to interviews. If only I was sure he would match with just a few interviews. I like all of the places that Russ has gotten interviews at so that is another plus. (Can you tell that I am trying to see the bright side of things here! ) And his interview yesterday for his internship year went awesome. He interviewed locally and they said they would love to have him. Does anyone know if that is something that they say to most of the applicants? My husband was thrilled with how it went until he reread the stats saying that they interview 150 people for 6 positions. Anyway... we are trying to think positive and just hope for the best.

One scary thing, my husband called the Univ. of Nebraska and they couldn't find his name anywhere on their computer. Wouldn't that be something if they lost Russ' file!!! Russ is hoping that the person he talked to, who didn't sound like she knew much about the process, just was looking in the wrong place. He is going to call the chairman today.

I can't tell you how happy I will be to have this done. We have friends who have already received verbal confirmation from programs that they want them and are making plans (they all went the DO route). I am quite jealous yet... we chose this route. Russ did have a position in Michigan doing gen. surgery but we feel that anesthesia is the better path for our family. SO... I guess we just need to be patient and pray that thinks will work out for the best.

                    • Oh Robin,

My heart goes out to you--hanging in the lurch is no fun! Hopefully, you guys will find a program that feels right. Don't worry, it is still very early in the interview season. How are your boys handling the uncertainty?

                          • Thanks Kelly for the cheer-me-up! We are hanging in there. We did receive all the info about Iowa's program over the weekend and that cheered us up a bit. My husband was really impressed with the program and I had fun looking at the maps and attractions.

My kids are going through their different emotions too. Some days they are bummed and don't want to move at all because they will miss all their friends. This morning, however, I told them what the possible choices were (so far) and we talked about the pluses and minuses of each. They were very excited by the end of the conversation which made me more excited about the whole idea of moving. They miss snow so Iowa holds appeal to them along with the fact that I told them that a river runs right through the town! They thought that was cool. I also told them they would probably be more in the country there then they are here which made them excited too. Oregon is exciting to them as well being that their grandparents are in the same state and they are somewhat familiar with the area. Tucson is okay (their last choice) because it will be similar to where we are living now. It is interesting to see how my kids think. We had a good productive talk this morning and that started my day off good too.

                            Thanks for asking.
