I like it much better now where you find out and no one else has to know yet. Out of curiosity, how did they handle the students that didn't match?

Yes, kids always are the eternal optimists. They always keep trying long after adults give up. Sometimes I think that they hold the secrets of the universe. To them, life is one grand adventure to be embraced rather than a new set of a challenges to be dealt with.

As far as your question about the match, we knew whether or not we had matched at some program on the Tuesday night before the Match. The students who did not match found out that they needed to "scramble" over the next two days and interview telephonically with the programs that didn't fill all their positions. When we walked into that auditorium, we knew that we had matched at one of the 13 or 14 programs we had applied for. I'm glad that your program allows this to be a private moment--it really should be.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but Matt had the same thing happen when he interviewed at Dartmouth College and the University of UT for anesthesia- "You would fit very well into our program or We would love to have you! Blah blah blah." Well Matt ended up ranking Dartmouth #1 (UT was #2) because he really liked the program and because of the comment thought that he would definitely Match there. There is a term that is used when programs do that- make you believe that you will Match at their program. He ended up matching with his #3 choice- Washington.



I do know that it is illegal for program to give a verbal confirmation stating that an applicant will Match at that particular program given that the applicant ranks them high on the ROL (NRMP states- "Both applicants and programs may try to influence decisions in their favor, but any verbal or written contracts prior to the submission of Rank Order Lists is a violation of the Match"). There were a couple of programs last year who violated the Match policies, and I don't know what happened to them. Anyway the CU students were warned about it and how it could jeopardize them matching if they went along with such activity.



Everything will work out. If Russ doesn't interview alot of programs then make sure he lists all of the ones interviews at on his ROL- the more you list the better of a chance you have of matching. Anesthesia is more forgiving (easier to Match) than surgery. =-)

I heard it violates match policy too...but I think a lot of programs do it anyway! We were lucky in a way not to go through the match....but in many other ways, I wish that we had just so we would have perhaps had a greater number of programs to "choose" from!
