So...James got one for Christmas. He doesn't get it. He's three and a half and loves the joystick and stuff, but doesn't understand that it relates to the TV. Should I take it back or keep trying?

Keep trying. Between his hearing loss and his age, it may just take him a bit longer to catch on. Jacob (who has no hearing loss) really started to excel at video games in general around 4. We got VSmile last Christmas, and it still took him a bit to bother to listen to the directions.

    Can James hear the instructions?

Maybe that is the root of my frustration. He has a difficult time because there are the instructions and music playing at the same time No captioning. Not like he can read, but sometimes it cues him that there is something happening he needs to pay attention to. I can turn the music off, but he just doesn't understand that the joystick makes the characters move...I just need to be patient. I get uptight about what he can and can't do, worrying if it is normal. God, I need to get over it before he starts to pick up on it

      We'll hang in there

A lot of the game is following the audio instructions - I'm sorry but I forget if he can hear at all?? I had to stop and really think about it this morning. If he isn't able to hear the instruction at all, then even once he connects the joystick w/the characters on the screen he'll still be frustrated.

I suggest calling VSmile and asking what they suggest for hearing impaired children. They may have something - or this may be what it takes to prompt them to create something.
