  • Little Stinker II

OK, you parents who have had your small people since infancy will probably laugh- but nothing in my life has prepared me for the cleaning I have done in the last two hours.

Apparently what we have is really the Roto-Rooter Virus. The smell...the floor, the toys, the walls, the clothing (socks, pants, shirts).

I stripped him, I stripped me and together we took a shower. I've scrubbed the floors (a moment of thanks to the genious who invented elbow length rubber gloves), the walls, the toys. I sterilized the gloves. I have him in jammies watching elmo and drinking diluted Gatorade. I am halfway through the extra hot soaking wash of the clothes. I'm going to call our market that delivers and see if they have bleach and Lysol since I don't actually use those products- I don't have any on hand.

I can't get the smell out of my nose. I need a jar of Vicks Vapo-Rub like when I had to go into the dead guys house.

and I'm sure this is just the first round.

and of course, my husband is in El Paso.

If the Vicks works for third world bathrooms, it should work for the virus!

Ugh. I know what you mean when you smell it *everywhere*. Is it warm enough to open windows?

I had to get some smell -- oh yeah, -- out of the car seat and I used the Bi-O-Kleen odor eliminator. It has a nice limey smell. And I put the carseat out in the sun for a few days.

Oh goodnes, I hope you both get better soon. I thought of you last night, as I was agonizing after one too many dried apricots. I was sure you'd be all better by now.

Don't worry. Soon all sense of smell will be burned away after tolerating it for so long.

Go slow w/the gatorade. My ped says wait 30 min after vomit and then allow a SIP of water. Wait another 15, allow another sip. You can slowly taper the waiting period down after that.

It sounds cruel, but after having the rhoda virus I learned that it's the ONLY means by which to tell if they really can tolerate it again.

        Good luck.

We had success with the pedialite ice pops. They are forced to sip slowly.

That's what I figured it was. I've been there... it's awful. Happy sanitizing and quick healing.

Luckily only the daycare ladies had to deal with the issue.

He was able to keep down a piece of toast for dinner so I'm whatever the nudge away from cautiously optimistic is.

I still don't think I'll take him to daycare tomorrow.

(fluff- I'll look for the pops tomorrow. We have 100 different kinds of tylenol but nothing else useful.)

Just make sure you stick to the B.R.A.T. diet for a few days after he appears better...it took us weeks to shake off the diarrhea w/ DS.
That's when my ped told me about the Banannas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast diet.

and if he demands milk, try rice milk - after my 2 YO had it for a few days, he didn't want to go back to the regular kind.
(it's really nutritionally valueless, but it's easy on the stomach, and it resembles milk, and it goes in a bottle)

We've had no further incidents but then again, he's only had toast for the last two meals.

I'm keeping him home but we will be going to my 1:00 meeting. I have a ton of errands to do so it's kind of nice to do them during the week so that we can play with the Daddy on the weekend.

I'll pick up some rice milk- he's asked for regular milk and looked at me like I was from another planet when I said no. (for two years now it's been all about getting the calories into this kid)

Thanks for the good ideas and the good wishes.

                          Keeping my fingers crossed.

My deepest, strongest, most heart felt condolences. Rotovirus sucks.

My advice: Keep the laundry going constantly. Seriously. You'll burn through every sheet and towel in the house with all the vomit and crap and yuck.

If he gives up drinking fluids, take him in for an IV. Again, I'm not kidding about this. At 8 months DS was hospitalized because he refused to nurse or ingest anything after his perpetual vomiting. They advised me that rotovirus kills a lot of kids in the third world because they just don't understand that they have to stay hydrated.

Sending out my strongest puke-free vibes to you.

Good luck, and my heart goes out to you. We have been through it as well. Method makes a good odor eliminator that really takes the stink out of the air.
