  • ideas for preschool presentation

DD's Montessori preschool has asked DH, as part of their study of "community helpers," to come in and do a little talk about being a doctor. He's a little stumped about what to talk about and says that he's not going to show them what he really does at the hospital everyday!

I've suggested that perhaps he approach it more as a pediatrician, maybe bring in some stethoscopes, etc, some things that kids might see on their well-child visit to their doctor and talk about how the doctor helps them to stay well and be healthy.

But DH could really use some other ideas. Help anyone?

DH did this last year for DS's montessori class. DH wrongfully appropriated a bunch of surgical scrub hats, booties, gloves, etc to pass out to the kids. He brought in an age appropriate book about the human body and read it to them. He allowed them to practice tying knots on his little gear-thingy. Then they had a question/answer period which included things like "Should I put funny things into my mouth?" It was a lot of fun and it helped connect up DS and DH.

This year we're trying to get him in again, but it will be more "scientific" for the first through third graders. During grad school he had access to human organs that he would take out to classes. Does your honey have access to this?

    Have fun with this!

"And then I take this scapel, see..."

I like your idea. What to expect and not to be afraid. There are lots of books to about visiting the doctor. Tell him to back off the power point though.

Too cute. DH would be thrilled to do a parent-doctor talk. That's a badge of honor.

And then I take this huuuuuuuge needle for epidurals...

I think this will be fun! And it will be memorable for the kids!

I once saw a nurse bring in a bag of (im not exacty sure what it was) i think cornstarch. She gave each student a bit to rub into their hands. Then they all washed their hands very very well and talked about how important it is to wash your hands and be clean. The nurse then turned off all of the lights and brought out a black light. She let each student put their hands under the lights to see how many "germs" were still left on their hands. It was pretty cool.

We will have to do this next year at the granola school that we're transferring Nikolai to-

We talked about the stethescope, maybe bringing in a kid-sized blood pressure cuff, using the thingies that they use to check reflexes (to talk about why you leg moves, when they do that). Maybe bring in tongue depressers and they can make stuff out of them. they could talk about taking their temperatures, etc.

I like the hand-washing thing. That one is going to get filed away. I like the misapproriating surgical stuff, too. Good thing we have a friend in the er.

DH read this thread, and he laughed when he read this part, Annie. The power point thing...you have him pegged!

I'll report back about the q and a's afterwards.

We just taught the kids about doctors last week at school. Their favorite part was listening to their own and others hearts with the stethescope. I also brought in some different bandages and let them bandage up thier friends which they loved. DF let me borrow his Netters Anatomy Book and I showed certain pics to the kids so they could see what their bones looked like and then we felt our bodies for those bones ie, ribs, jaw, elbows etc. They really enjoyed it!

DH has done this with preschool and third graders. He handed out scrub masks and booties to the third graders. We've got pictures of them in the yearbook. They loved it. (They always love to get stuff.)

He's also done the handwashing thing from the approach that nobody knows how to wash hands like a surgeon. The kids are always blown away that he would scrub his hands for.....like 5 minutes!!! Awe. And they also like the cool sinks with foot pedals. (He did a tour once in the ORs.)

Tell him to prep. DH was shocked the first time at how harsh a preschool audience can be. They have no built in polite behavior for the speaker. If he's not interesting....they will let him know. DH was surprised how hard he had to work to keep their interest for ten minutes.

I've done the germ/glo stuff. I don't know if cornstarch alone works. I've used "glo-germ". It is cheap and easy to use. You can have the kids put it on at the beginning and then go about your activity. At the end, you can flip the lights and let them see how far the germs travelled in such a little time.

ITA sounds like a great idea. I just was remembering back to when I was in primary school and a doctor came into our class and one of the things he did that I thought was the coolest thing ever at the time was he held the stetoscope up to his heart and let us all have a listen to what the doctors hear when we go to the family doctor ourselves when we are sick.
