  • ? for you pregnacious ones

hey- as I'm sipping my G & T (sorry) I was wondering if there has ever been any recommendations about tonic water during labor. Since quinine has been known to help with cramps (ergo my G & T) I was wondering. It's been prescribed for leg cramps but I just read in the paper that they're not using it anymore. BUT... labor is sort of a one time gig (or a one at a time gig anyway) so I was wondering if it would help at least take the edge off without 'medication'.

First of all, no fair beginning a post to those of us who are knocked up, er, with child, by flaunting your cocktail. :mom2b: :badday: It's just not cool.

I haven't heard anything about that. I would be interested to hear what others have to say...

Hey I'm the first to say that infertility has a most definite upside...

(everyone who attended my baby shower said it was the funnest one ever- no cranky pregnant people and lots of wine!)

But seriously, I'd be curious to know if anyone has ever checked it out. I usually drink diet tonic by the liter during a certain time of the month.

I'm wondering if I should take a few liters to the hospital w/ me to sip on when the old uterus begins its post op contracting back down to size. Or I guess I I'll could try this once I get my period back.

I started to ask DH , what he knew about quinine? Before I was even able to mention anything else, he said "you mean quinine sulfate for cramps" (in general), I said "ah ha it's true" (not that I doubted you Jenn)...it was just funny that I didn't even get my explanation for my question out, before he gave me an answer that went a long w/ what Jenn posted !
I then mentioned consuming tonic water...he said "yes, I guess that would help!"

OK, not only did I not know what quinine was - I still have no clue what tonic water is!

tonic water is basically soda water with quinine and citric acid added. It's a mixer with gin or vodka but I personally like the taste of tonic just on it's own. quinine has been known to help cramps for eons.

I usually buy two liter bottles of diet tonic whenever I can find them because I'd much rather have a big glass of tonic water with a lime than any soda currently made.

I love tonic water with a wedge of lime too. The taste is hard to describe. It is sweet but not like regular sodas and has a citrusy and bitter (in a good way) sort of taste.

This was a while ago w/ my first pregnancy but someone commented that maybe I shouldn't drink too much because of the quinine.

same thing happened to me. I love tonic water, and I honestly don't think I've ever had it w/something alcoholic in it.

So, if I want to try some of this - it's OK to drink it when I'm pregnant?

Now it's not that plain soda water stuff, is it? You know - the kind that tastes like water with bubbles in it?

Nope, it's usually right next to the soda water- the labels are usually yellow- schweppes and Canada Dry make it.

Does HEB sell it? I have the darndest time finding normal things like 2 liters of A&W rootbeer there. I loooove Ginger Ale - so if it's anything like that I might enjoy it.

I think you're supposed to steer clear when pregnant. That's what I've heard anyway.

HEB sells it- as long as you're not shopping at the barrio HEB like I do. (no broccoli at my HEB.) (name one Mexican food that contains broccoli)

If you like sharp ginger ale- the kind that tastes actually like ginger- you'll probably like it.

Drinking tonic water before bedtime may be helpful because it contains small amounts of quinine, a substance that may help reduce cramping. The small amount of quinine found in tonic water (the amount varies by brand) is generally considered safe and may provide some benefit, although pregnant women and those with liver problems should avoid quinine in any form.
