  • Baby baptism gift - ideas?

We're attending the Catholic baptism of my good friend's son in a few weeks and I have no idea what kind of gift to give. When Jack was baptized, he got things like engraved keepsake silver cups that ... he's never used. I want to try to stay away from things like that, but a cursory internet search hasn't turned up anything promising. I saw a sterling silver piggy bank in the shape of Noah's Ark that looked kind of cute, but wasn't sure if that would be appropriate.

    Any ideas?

I got the engraved Noah's Ark bank for a friend's daughter. I had a hard time figuring out what to get...so I have no other suggestions. Sorry!

I usually give a savings bond for the child and religious gift for the parents- once I gave a handmade wooden cross covered in milagros (small totem that are placed under candles when praying for that particular thing- it started when my friend lit a candle with a heart on it to find a husband, continued when she lit a candle for help with her baby daughters injured arm and it continues today as I had to send her a leg and a heart for her blood clot problem), the one for her son I got a very cool looking handblown statue of Mary from a glass-blower here in SA.

We received one of these http://www.theblanket.com when Quinn was born and we love it. Very soft and washable blanket. You could request that it reference the baptism date or something.

I agree with the savings bond. Otherwise, DD got a Waterford block for hers that I love, but I love crystal. Most of the things we received that were engraved were pretty cheesy.

DS was 15 weeks when he was baptised so not sure if this child is as small and some of the things he got where:

silver frames, silver comb and brush, lots of silver really, and some Beatrix Potter collectables.

We also got, baby towels engraved with his bname and date of baptism, and baby blankets the same which he still uses all the time, my favourite gift was someone gave us a token to have his hand and footprint done by a professional and framed, its really beautifully done. We also got a token for a professional photo session which again the picture are beautiful.

Thanks everyone! Such great ideas, I knew I could count on you.

I like the idea of an religious-themed book (baby will be 3 months old) along with something else (but I haven't decided what that "something else" will be).
