I was a minimalist with our babies. We only had the bare essentials and baby slept with us.....but I did find that we needed something to hold the baby safely when I needed two hands. A sling, a swing, a playpen.....something. I'd add that to Luanne's bare essentials. Baby monitor is also great for freedom without as much worry. Save the stroller purchase until you figure out what you'd use most. Strollers are so specialized - and pricey - you should get the one that works for your lifestyle.

The most recent baby bargains book I have actually says not to buy the warmer because of damage to the changing table and/or child.

Oh, I didn't even buy a changing table. We had an old dresser that worked just fine. Got one of those concave, padded changing pads things, put in on top of the dresser, and we were golden.

We did that too. Changing tables are sort of "short term" furniture and don't have a lot of other uses. Unless you know you will be passing it along to several kids -- which is why we have a toddler bed. That is also because of space issues.

We're not buying a changing table either - just a dresser and a crib but I would assume the warmer would damage any piece of furniture you set it on.

I agree and that would really stink to damage a piece of furniture you wanted to keep long term.

 Dreft detergent
 Bottle Sterilizer (we have it, don't use it)
 Wipes Warmer
 Bottle Warmer

AMEN to this. Didn't need any of these things. The amount of CRAP the stores try to convince you to buy is unbelievable.

Right on. MIL bought us a bottle warmer for our first kid - I think we used it once, and then .... I have no idea where it is, actually.
My wacko SIL is finally letting one of her kids go to term , and registered for the craziest stuff, and got all of it! bottle warmer, wipes warmer, and even a little absorbent thing to put over the baby's manhood so he doesn't spray you while being changed.

I've never even heard of that! I wonder how much money they wasted on it. We can all laugh b/c she'll get sprayed anyway!

and if she wants to avoid getting sprayed all together, she should just plan to keep him in diapers- potty training requires excellent response times to avoid wall/floor/clothing/mommy splashing.
