Yikes, did we have a day.
It all started last night when I was getting him ready for a bath. I stripped him and noticed that his groin area was pink and hot. My original thought was heat rash but I knew he hadn't been feeling well since he didn't eat any lunch at school and when we got home he told me that his tummy hurt. He drank a little bit of water and had a Hershey's kiss.
I bathed him and he was fevery so I gave him some tylenol and called our friend who is the neonatal fellow and got her advice. I kept him pumped up on tylenol all night. (and I guess I was starting to get on his nerves as the last time I went in he told me that I needed to go to sleep, too)
This morning I called the triage nurse at the Army peds clinic and got him an appointment for 3pm. In the meantime, I kept the tylenol going and attempted to get him to drink and/or eat for me. (pretty much no for both)
Finally, we both napped and got up and went straight to ped clinic. By then he was covered in spots all over his torso. But, his normal auto immune response is to break out in a rash everytime he has a virus so I wasn't too concerned. We saw the NP and she wanted to get a urine sample and he was not having any of that. So they tried to cath him. a couple of times. (add that to the list of stuff for therapy) He ended up puking on me, them, himself. The NP also said that his throat was raw and looked like strep so she cultured it.
Finally, I guess the word had gotten out that we were there since the Clinic Director came by, the various staff that know Rick came by, and next thing I know, one of the most fab pediatricians (a Colonel) basically just took over. Nikolai was put on IVfluids (600 ccs!) and finally at about 500 ccs, he decided he could go to the bathroom. He was cracking me up on the way- and the poor Sgt. who was helping me steer the IV thing. Like they had stuck a urine bag to him and he looked down in the bathroom and said, "what is that on my pecker?" I said, "it's a bag to hold your pee." and he said, "that's just silly."
He squeezed out enough for them to culture and then went back to finish off the rest of the 600ccs.
So, now we're waiting on the blood work, the urine culture and the throat swab.
Rick is going to go ballistic about the cath thing- I called my friend Jeannette again and she said that trying to cath a 3yo uncircumsized boy w/ swelling and a fever would have been impossible pretty much from the start. (maybe that's why the col. took over)
They did start him on antibiotics on the assumption that he has strep and after all that fluid he was definitely feeling better. The colonel did make me fell better that Nikolai was so dehydrated because he told that some people just shut down when they're that sick and his wife is one of them. He said you can't get them to eat or drink - that helped because of course I was awash in mommy guilt.
The colonel is going to call me tomorrow with the culture results.
Man, what a day. Nikolai is asleep and I'm not far from it.
