I was told by a babysitter today that she would babysit my kids and a friend's child together but that her policy is that the parents each pay her separately her regular hourly rate. So that means I pay her $10 an hour, and my friend pays her $8 an hour, then she is getting $18 an hour just bc one child is not related. I was annoyed. Justified?

Re: Is this fair? B-sitter question
Sounds like it's time for a new sitter. I can see maybe paying a total for all kids of 12-14$ an hour, maybe. We've done community babysitting before where the two girls that watched the kids have gotten 3-5$ and hour for each kid. They've had over 10 kids before, even at 3$ per kid that adds up and depending how old the kids are they play amongst themselves. They have always been pleased with the $, even having to split it.

Re: Is this fair? B-sitter question
I don't think that's fair. I can see maybe $12-14/hr for all 3 kids, but that's it. If she's charging each person an hourly rate, that's robbery. If she's having a group of non-related children, she's essentially running a group daycare, and I don't know of any group daycare that charges like that. The teachers that work in group daycares or daycare centers do not make 18/hr!!
Now don't get me wrong, I was a babysitter myself all through high school and college and it takes a special person to watch kids day in and day out, but it seems that nowadays the price of sitters is ridiculous. I don't know how people work full-time if you have to pay for childcare for 2 or more children.Wife to a PGY-7 Interventional Cardiology Fellow, Mom to two. DS(7) and DD(3).

Re: Is this fair? B-sitter question
Oh, she's completely taking you for a ride. That's ridiculous. If she wants each parent couple to pay her separately, that's fine. However, she should renegotiate her rate with you! Otherwise, she's screwing you over. Set aside the fact that the net effect to HER will be that she almost doubles her hourly rate (without any readily apparent justification for such a wage boost). That's just annoying--but, if you continue to receive the exact same/better service as/than before, what do you care? You already were comfortable paying $10/hour for this service. However, the net effect to YOU is not neutral...it is negative--you get less service for the same price. You will continue to pay her regularly negotiated rate although she actually will be providing your child/ren with LESS supervision and individualized attention (I assume that's what you're paying for).
I take it your babysitter with not be majoring in either math or economics (or business!) in college...
