  • Book recommendations for 3.5 yr old?

DH and I want to get his little brother a set/series of books for Christmas since he's just starting to read at night with mom and dad. He's 3.5 years old and we're completely out of touch about what would be a good set/series of books to get him. All I can think of is the Clifford red dog books...any good recommendations?

For learning to read himself I would suggest the Bob books. They are small for little hands, simple words with simple stick figure drawings.

We're big fans of Dr. Suess here because they can memorize them and repeat them back ('reading' to you).

Nikolai also loves books about how things work. (I found a book about the life cycle of trees and it's really interesting and easy to understand)

Clifford scares me. I don't know why.

My almost 4 yo kittenbritches loves the Skippyjon Jones book. I almost typed song because she is usually singing the little jingle from the book it.

Skippyjon Jones is the current favorite of my 2yo (and me, too). Holy Frijoles!

I like the Sandra Boynton- but they probably have a few of those around.

We have the large Curious George volume- it's got several books inside it. It is a lot of fun. Luke (3.5 years old) likes the Curious George stories- and the twins (6.5) who are not advanced readers, are just able to read the stories independently too.

Definitely not PC- as far as the smoking thing and then the "being carried off to the zoo" idea too. But they are fun.

Thank you everyone! I'll start a list and check them out at Borders next time we're by the mall. I do love Amelia Bedelia and I have seen a few of those books at the house already, but she just cracks me up!

Ladybug, I'm exposing my ignorance here...

Where did you get this information? I've never heard that their listening comprehension and reading levels converge around 8th grade before (that I can remember) and I want explore it further...

Can you point me in the right direction?

Seriously I'm not challenging the idea, in case that popped into your head, I really want to learn more about it.

                    Has anyone mentioned Eric Carle...
I will never forget being @ the Lincoln park Zoo when DS1 started shouting at the bear display "Brown Bear Brown bear what do you see?" About four or five adults & some of their little ones replied "I see a red bird looking at me!" We all just started laughing

I can't recall the title right now but there is an Eric Carle book that has kids act out different animals. That one is fun and a good way to read and book and wiggle around.

DD's kindergarten class also did Eric Carle style artwork. It was a great project.

We like Harold's Purple Crayon, fairytales, Seek and finds, Sandra Boynton, character books like Clifford, Princesses, Sponge Bob, and the Berenstein Bears, Mice and Beans, A Bad Case of Stripes, Clorinda, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, anything by Mark Teague (How does a Dinosaur act), Eric Carle.

I am a complete kids' lit whore. I can't seem to stop myself.

Going to the book store has now become and "daddy and dude" event. (which is fine w/ me- they're both out of my hair for a few hours and I can limit the expenditures..."no honey, we only have $30 in the checking account" [which may or may not be true])

It's because we have to read the books over and over again- I have way too many books (we're talking 100s) but we read them so much.

There is a good book called "you read to me I'll read to you" and it's a hard-bound book that has a lot of short stories/books within it. It's fun too. But probably better for ages 5-8.

Fantastic series! You all are making me want to climb up four half levels to check our kids' bookshelves.

Nope. I'm just not that motivated.
