  • Children's nicknames...

What are some of the nicknames that your children go by? Somehow, we've ended up calling Alex "tootleboot" (Don't ask, I have no clue!)

It just sounds so hilarious....I have no idea where we got it from, but he loves it.

I sometimes call our oldest "monkey-moo", which started off because my dad called her "Maya-moo" and it evolved over time. I hope the "moo" part doesn't give her a complex, but she is as skinny as a rail so I doubt it. I call our second "Siddy Sid Sid", don't ask me why--her name is Sydney and it is several syllables longer.

I was always Lady Jane to my mom, and my brother (until he was 3- was "Young John Virgin" to my parents and "Baby Johnny" to me- and when I really want to annoy him he is still Baby Johnny. And we call our parents Madre (left over from when John was taking high school Spanish) and my dad is somehow "Pops".

My cousin Elizabeth was shorted to EB and she remains that today. Her mom was in high school when I was born and her name is Anthea- and really, who can say Aunt Anthea? so she was shortened to Tia (aunt in Spanish) also from high school Spanish class.

The best one though is my grandmother, who is "Doot". (Rhymes with foot). the story is that back in the '20's when she was a young girl, she was a real pest to her older siblings. Apparently there was a slang word for this and it was called 'dooting' , as in "Betty, stop 'dooting' me". So, the name stuck and when she had grandchildren, that's what she was called. The kicker to the story is that Dave Barry ran this whole column on playing scrabble and using the word 'Doot'. He ended one paragraph with the question "what is a Doot". So my dad wrote him a letter and said "a Doot is my mother" and for her 80th birthday that year he sent a signed copy of the column and a birthday card. Pretty cool, huh?
