      Amen sisters!

I have a two and a half year old who screams and kicks if I talk about putting him on the potty. I've sort of let this go but it does bother me when my MIL says, "my kids were all potty trained by two." With the not-so-subtle underlying message, "what is wrong with your parenting skills?"

I try not to get into these battles, but it is soooo hard. Our little guy likes to dig his heals in where he can whether it be refusing to eat or not going potty. I need to just take a zen-like attitude about this but GIVE ME STRENGTH! In some ways he is dh reincarnated, he likes to be in charge whenever possible. Right now, he is exercising his control over the his parents by not eating the foods set before him and not going on the potty. With this kind of yielding of power, I wonder what the teenage years hold for us. 8O

I wish I was reporting that my little angel has finally decided to give her poor mother a break, but NO!!! That child is still peeing her pants! She will go several days without accidents, and then out of the blue will pee her pants several times in one day. It is driving me crazy, however, I basically have given up. If I notice she has peed I point it out to her, tell her to go change, and let it go. My parents as teacher lady suggested getting a timer and setting it all day at hour intervals. When it goes off she can go to the toilet. I haven't actually instituted this yet, but I might get a timer sometime this weekend.
Kelly, don't worry about your mother-in-law. In my opinion, people who potty trained their kids 30 years ago often have a "blurry memory" about this sort of thing. The little boy I used to watch wasn't even interested until he was almost 3 and then he was 100% trained over the weekend.
I think their bowel/bladder is the only thing they truly have control so they sometimes are a little reluctant to "give in" when they know how much we want them to do it.

Thanks for the vote of confidence...the mil thing goes much, much deeper than a few thoughtless comments to undermine my self-esteem. But that is another topic for another day! Heck, I've often joked that we should have a sister website for dealing with the inlaws of physician spouses.

Anyway, after much informal data gathering (i.e. chatting amongst friends), little boys do take much longer than girls. My hubby jokes that men can be such pigs that he would still be wearing diapers if it was socially acceptable. While a couple of moms say that their little guys were trained around two, many, many more say that three plus was the age of success. When I am more objective, I try to take into account that my little guy tends to be a tad bit behind the bell curve in growth and physical skills areas (i.e. late walker, late jumper, runner, small for his age). This will probably translate into late potty training as well. It is me who has to let it go and wait for his lead. Not the easiest thing to do.

Best of luck to all of our little ones in their mastery of the potty! Better luck yet to all of us in exhibiting the most patience possible.

            Kelly,
I hadn't thought about it in the way of physical development, but now that I do, my daughter has also been behind in that area. She was an early walker, but is small for her age, was slow to do more advanced things like jump, and just now looks more coordinated while she runs. I wonder if mentally she is potty trained but her bladder isn't as developed??? Anyway, food for thought!
