The base of the seat is 14" wide, maybe a bit more with the padding that I squished when I measured. The arm rests, which I don't think are removable, are around 17.25" at the widest.

Nellie, is Anna comfortable in the Safeguard seat? We're looking for a booster/combination seat for Jack (who will be 3 soon), and I read a couple of reviews of the seat that said the child wasn't very comfortable. I'm looking for something I can use as a forward-facing car seat and then convert to a booster later.

She was -- until she realized that some kids her age sit in the seat as a belt-positioning booster. Now she complains about the 5 pt harness incessently. She is bigger, maybe it doesn't fit as well but I have my doubts. Maybe you could find it in a store and try it out first.
