  • Update to the very bad week

Thanks everyone. Today was the first day in a week that I can see a hint of MY little boy. All of the sedation from the second MRI on Wednesday (which was highly focused and he needed to be super still for and of course being 5 he couldn't) finally wore off and Saturday he was able to get up and walk the floor for the first time today. He is unsteady on his feet but his spirits are brighter because he got to see the Med Flight helicopters all day. Their landing pad is visible from most of the wing he is on. The 3 walks tuckered him out completely but he was so happy to be mobile again.

The 3rd MRI on Friday showed the swelling has decreased but they say a full recovery could be as long as 6 months. He will have another MRI and EEG on Monday and when he is a bit more steady on his feet, he will be able to be discharged. We are all so thankful that it looks like he should make a full recovery that I can hardly put it into words. Thankful just doesn't cover it.

I think we will be over the worst of it within 1-2 months (gut feeling here) and because he is in public school, he will be able to get the therapy he needs through the district for free. Thank goodness, because I can't even begin to fathom how much this is going to cost. 2 CT's, 3 MRI's, 3 EEG's, 2 days in the PICU, 5-7 days on the floor, plus all of the meds and the testing the Infectious Disease attending ordered. Then we will have weekly follow-ups with our regular ped and the neurologist has mentioned at least a couple of MRI's done as an outpatient... I am hoping that this will be good for our taxes!

Speaking of the cost, October and November are usually open enrollment for benefits. A medical flex spending account could really help.

:grouphug: I'm so glad he's doing better and expected to be fine. How horribly scary.

with the bills. Here's hoping most of it's totally covered!

I can't believe I missed all of this. I"m sorry you had and are still having to go through this! You guys will be in my thoughts.

We were told (by the social worker) sometimes you can qualify for situational medicaid...or something like that. I don't remember all of the specifics but we applied for it when Daegan was in the NICU....we were denied, but the nurses and social worker were surprised we didn't qualify. Thankfully our insurance picked up ~80% and the hospital picked up the rest (some kind of employee discount thing).

Hang in there! That sounds sooo scary!

That is good to know. I will have to look into it. I know our state has a very good program covering uninsured/underinsured kids and pregnant women. I'm currently on it because of the baby and it will pick up the portion that our insurance doesn't. I will be checking into it for DS because it is typically retroactive for a few months.
