    happy family

    I love research! DH has been in the lab for three weeks and things are totally different. We share parenting equitably now! Wow! DH signed the little guy up for skating classes which he intends to take him to. I will be responsible for the Spanish classes. We have decided that on the night of an extracurricular class, the other parent gets their own time to do whatever they want. DH shares with the childrearing tasks like potty assists, tucking in, and making dinner on a near 50/50 basis. :!: 8O In fact, DH even decided to drive home to Ohio for a few days to see his family and took the little guy with him! I can honestly say that the whole family is happier now that we have time to equally coparent. It rocks! I can't even compare this to Q3 call and 100 hour work weeks. DH is a new, happier man.

    Let this serve as hope to all of us in the darkest hours of quasi-single parenting during residency. It gets better!

        That is so great for all of you, Kelly! Must feel like a different world.

        While I don't have a surgery residency to compare it to, I am *loving* Eric's current derm research fellowship. Now that he has secured a residency position, it is much more relaxed. We all benefit from it. And I think he is so much happier now that he has time to pursue actual hobbies and interests -- like the triathlon. The kiddo gets to see him -- and see him awake . And we get to go out alone when we can get a sitter . The derm residencies are certainly nothing to complain about but I am going to miss his super-flexible schedule!

          Yay for you guys, that's great. And here's to equitable parenting and spouses who actually have interests.

          We're currently basking in the summer break that follows M1. We can actually do things together on Saturday AND Sunday. It feels strange, in a way. And it's amazing to me that this is what life is like for other couples all the time (at least for most of our friends). It seems almost mean in a way, like "here's a little taste of what you'll be missing out on for most of the next six years." I'm not complaining though--it's great.

            It is great to hear that things can be so good! Makes me look forward to our own lab year, which is not for another 2 years ...

              Wow, that's great, Kelly. I need to pass this on to my best friend, who in engaged to a first year surgery intern! As you can imagine he has the worst schedule ever!

              Isn't it great when we all get to play "we have a normal family schedule" every now and then? My DH doesn't get home til 9 these days. Totally sucky!

                Thanks guys, I do appreciate this gift so much. We have had three years of cold Minnesota winters, Q2-Q4 call, and stress galore. It is nice to know that things aren't always going to be this way. Now, if I can talk DH out of that two year peds surgery fellowship that would reduce our clinical training down to only two more years. Chances of this happening---slim to none. But I'll keep hoping.
