How much do babies cost?

I'm just wondering, with all of this talk about babies and the fact that we plan to start "trying" soon ... How much do babies cost? I have absolutely no idea. I'd like to have a potential cost in mind for budgetary reasons, but I have no idea where to even start. I know that they need food, clothing, diapers, toys, etc. How much does all that stuff cost per month? I know it will vary by region and cost-of-living differences, but I'm really just looking for an idea of the very basics since I know we won't be able to afford too many fancy extras. Anyone?

I agree that diapers and wipes are by far the biggest ongoing expense. Carseats, strollers, pack-n-plays/cribs, high chairs, and whatever other entertainment you choose (exersaucers, johnny-jump-ups, swings) can be big ticket items, but if you have doting grandparents, some of those can be written off! And don't forget about resale shops.....I live in a fairly small city, and every time I go to our local resale place, I see stuff for babies that is practically brand new.....sometimes it is the latest model of whatever, sometimes not, but things are a lot cheaper there. Also, if you see a lot of one particular item, you can bet it didn't live up to expectations and know what NOT to buy.

Nursing does save a ton of money, as well.
