  • Sling for newborns

Ok. I realize there are several threads on baby wearing, but I don't have time to go through the 20-plus pages. My sweet girl wants to be upright and will only sleep for 5 minutes at a time during the day. That is usually in the car seat. Having three other kids and a house to take care of is not conducive to sitting around holding a baby while she sleeps. Plus, I can't sit still that long. I have a Bjorn that I use, but it is awkward when you are doing things so I thought a sling might work better.

Can you recommend a sling that worked well for you and your newborn? She is 6 weeks old. I am thinking some type of ring sling over a wrap. I know nothing about these things. Please give me your input. I am getting desperate.

I loved my k'tan. It's a wrap type sling with no tying. It's a continuous loop and she loved the newborn position in it.

I had a moby-like wrap that I really liked when K2 was a newborn. I was afraid he'd fall out or suffocate in the sling.

I got one of the free Seven slings, but DD wasn't comfortable in it, so I just used my Moby wrap. I love it until the baby gets to be about 12 pounds.

We bought a Balboa Baby ring sling on clearance, and it was the only thing he liked.

I think wraps are easier to keep baby upright than a sling, but YMMV. I used a HotPockets sling during the early newborn phase with mine. And a homemade Moby wrap. HotPockets are pretty mainstream so you should be able to find one locally to try out. Baby's bum should be at belly button level or above...otherwise your sling is too loose/pocket is too big.

I think that's one reason the Bjorns lose their comfort/ease. I think most people wear their baby too low. The baby carriers should mimic a natural in arms position.

I loved the Balboa ring sling. The weight distribution worked well for me when dd was in it. The padded strap also helped tremendously. Enjoy your little bean!
