Silicon dries our hair and for curly hair that spells frizz.

Sulfate free is a great way to go.

Oh, Brandi -- I'm so glad you popped into this thread! What do you think about the Moroccan Oil shampoo and conditioner?

Yes. Gotta make sure you read the bottles though...those tricky bastards that make Herbal Essences proudly proclaim that the shampoo has 0% silicone and the conditioner has 0% sulfates. Except sulfates are added to shampoo and the silicones are in the conditioners. Turds. I used to love that stuff too.

Until our girls are older their hair only gets washed once/week max. It really doesn't get dirty and it is much more manageable that way. Can you just pull it back in a ponytail or French braid until you cut it?

I really like it. Especially for long thick hair. It is fantastic.

I would switch to a brand shampoo and conditioner. It makes a TON of difference! Try and find something that says sulfate free. Bedhead, redken, matrix all make it. Also try a dry shampoo for in between days. Never too young to start teaching hair care.

Our routine is Suave for Kids 2-in-1 shampoo and Frizz-Ease conditioner in the bath, about three nights a week.

In the mornings I spray them down to very damp/ lightly wet and comb it through, and then fluff up Hazel's damp curls. I just use the detangler on specific snarls. Cora has slightly wavy hair and I blowdry it just on special occasions.

Ok looking at all of our products and they all have dimethicone or another one, so is it all products you should avoid with this or just shampoo/conditioner? Like my blow drying gel has it...

Why did I not know this and what do you recommend for both me and A?

When dd had long hair, we used Kiehl's conditioner and left it in. It doesn't have silicone in it. I'm 99% sure, because I talked to a gal about it at the store. It was SO good. And a little goes a long way. See if you can get a sample to try it out.

Dd has a short Dorothy Hamill cut. I LOVE it. No fuss. She gets a clip on one side in the morning and it stays that way until I take it out at night.

I think if you are going to blow dry with heat regularly, you might need a little silicone in your product for protection and frizz reduction. Hopefully Brandi has a minute to chime in. I prefer to avoid silicones completely, but I usually air-dry or use the dryer on warm. DD usually just goes to bed with her hair wet.

I don't know. I think I'd use a heat protector of some kind if frequently heat styling instead of a silicone-based gel, but I'm no pro. I definitely defer to B.

BTW - Redken's heat protection line (red bottles) rocks.

I know that brand name products cost more than drug store brands, but they last a loooooong time and work so much better. I end up using far less each time I wash/condition than I would with drugstore brands. I have long hair and it takes me forever to go through a litre bottle of good shampoo and conditioner.

If you're concerned about the price difference, check out your local Ulta. They frequently have pretty killer sales. I've never paid full price for Redken or Joico.

Also, if you're signed up for Birchbox, you can earn discounts for items you've tried in your monthly subscription. I've only had my subscription for a couple months and have already purchased an amazing leave-in conditioner that I'd never heard of before it arrived in my box of samples.

Ooh, is it the one in the red bottle? I bought the full version of that one - it's awesome!

No, it was in a small, white spray bottle.

From pictures, does A have curly hair? I thought her hair (and yours) was more like mine...fine and straight? If so, it requires more frequent washing (at least in my case) than my friends with curly hair. We showered growing up in the AM or got a run through with a damp comb/brush. We often went to school with damp hair that dried as we ate breakfast. I remember showering pre-school starting when I was like 8 or so and it may have been earlier.

Would a damp (or even lightly wet) comb work with a spray detangler and then 2 minutes with a blow dryer? If you don't get it all the way wet, blow drying should be very quick.

It is fine but it also has a natural wave to it. She has to be at school at 7:50, I'm not sure showering before school is going to be an option...my hair is usually better (less frizz) the 2nd morning after washing it.
