  • Entertaining the Kiddos During Winter Break

Any thoughts? The K Bros (ages 2.5 and 4yo) have two weeks off of school. DrK is working/on call Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and through the weekend. So, that's 16 consecutive days that they are stuck with me. I'm hugely preggo, achy, tired, and irritable too so I'll be loads of fun. And the weather is supposed to turn awful tomorrow.

I was going to try to hit some open gym time at the rec centers but IDK if the boys can handle it. My 4yo might go berserk in an such an unstructured setting and the 2.5yo might be too small/too timid depending on who else is playing. I'm not sure how much I'll have to chase after them to manage either.

K1 has requested playdates with a couple friends; he's even gone so far as to invite friends from school/try to set it up before asking me so now I'm scrambling to hammer it out with the other moms. There is a children's museum he wants to visit. I was thinking of taking them to the movies one day and the library if I'm up to the challenge. I am trying to set up some mother's helpers who can either go with me to these things in the morning or who can entertain the boys in the afternoons when I'm worn out. If the helpers work out, I'll probably have them come back when the baby arrives.

K1 especially struggles when his time is unstructured so I'm trying to set up a schedule that will keep him busy without exhausting or frustrating me.

We went to a "jump" place today, and it was wonderful.

Movies? My sisters as I are taking N to see Frozen, but maybe there are dollar movie options too?

I like the jump place idea. We have an Indoor safari park coupon to use too. And hopefully my in laws will come for more than 24 hours and do stuff with her too.

I'm starting to feel obnoxiously pregnant as well.

Yeah, the jump places fall into the same category as open gym. Not sure if my boys can handle the stimulation or if I'll need to chase after them until I get there. There is no way I'm going to climb into a bounce house.

Any movies other than frozen expected during break? Not Christmas movies.

Zoo? I know it's cold, but it's more structured "activity" and they can walk/sit in a stroller and have hot cocoa.

A new toy is also usually good at a time like that... A marble run or cardboard brick blocks. The novelty keeps them occupied for a little longer.

Along the toy line, big boxes (although your boys probably just did that after the move). Help them build a fort with rooms and crawl spaces. Then let them decorate with markers or crayons. This could be an all day project if you include going out to get the boxes, etc. you could even serve meals in the fort for a change of pace.

FYI: I'm talking LOTS of boxes

This is, I think, the best KC activity calendar: http://www.kcparent.com

                There is this list, http://www.kckidsfun.com/2013/12/ind...on-in-kc-2013/

And this site usually has ideas as well, http://www.kcedventures.com

I'm not much help we just kind of wing it and DH will be home almost the whole first week the kids are home, yay!

My kids get excited by themes.
-backwards day - we have dinner in the morning, breakfast at night, and are silly all day in between
                  - board game day
                  - book day
                  -pj movie day

Baking together, very long baths with bubbles and changing the water color, if there's snow, but I don't want to go play in it, I sometimes bring it inside to play in either Rubbermaid tubs or the bathtub.

We'll be taking the kids to see walking with dinosaurs(?) Over break. Not sure what the rating is but my impression was that it's intended for kids.

A friend of mine with kids the same age was taking her two to see the Dino movie last night.

What did she say about it? I'm wondering if it would be scary for them
They are afraid of the dinosaurs at t'rex cafe

I texted her, they didn't see it, it was sold out.
