I found the perfect way to decide if I can handle a second dog, I became a foster home for a dog waiting for adoption. I picked up "Rudy" on Sunday. He is a two year old Chihuahua mix, rescued from a kill shelter. He is really sweet, gets along well with Winston, they even eat out of the same bowl. The only thing they are aggressive about are the rawhide chews. He acts as if he has lived in my home forever. We will be taking him to various adoption days to help him find a permanent home.

That's cool Luanne! At first when I read your post I thought you were taking in kids!!! That's a great way to figure out if you can handle two dogs, and who knows, maybe one of your foster doggies will become a permanent resident?

LOL - Sue with two kids and two stepkids the last thing I want is another one. I'll stick to dogs!! So far thedogs get along OK. I just know I will have a hard time giving him up. My plan is to wait until I have Jory used to two dogs in the house, and one day the foster dog will just never go away!! Then again, if noone adopts Rudy I'll keep him and no more fostering.

Well Matt, I haven't given him up yet!!!! The only thing that helps is knowing if I find him a home I can save another one. There are two shelters that euthanize the animals on Thursdays, and the woman who runs this organization (all volunteer) goes on Wednesdays and takes out any dogs that she thinks she can find a home for. She then places them in foster care until they are adopted. The dogs are all neutered or spayed and given their shots before they are adopted out. It really is cool, I just hope I can give Rudy up if he gets an adoption offer, if not he will be my one and only foster dog!!

              Luanne,

This sounds like a lot of fun and is a great way to ease into a second dog while rescuing them.

              How is it going?

Things are fine here, I really like having the two dogs. They act like they were raised together. I took Rudy to my Vet yesterday, she said he is probably between 2 and 4 years old, se we decided he can be 3, and we made his birthday Jan 25th, the day we picked him up. She also said he is most likely a chihuahua and dachsund mix, he weighs 11 pounds.

I found this group through the internet, http://www.puppylovenj.com . They have a nice website, check it out!! I'm hoping noone will want to adopt him because I would really like to keep him, especially since he and Winston do so well together,

Well, I'm not much of a foster mom, I officially adopted "Rudy Franklin" on Saturday. I haven't told my husband yet. The adoption papers are in the trunk of my car. I actually pretended to go to an adoption fair with the dog on Sunday!!!! I called Jory and told him nobody wanted the dog. I'm going to another "pretend adoption" this weekend. Then I suppose I'll just wait until he notices the dog is still here. Winston loves the dog, they play really well and he seems much happier having a friend. Thank goodness it takes my husband a LONG time to notice things. Wish me luick, I felt the need to share this with someone.

                    Luanne,

You crack me up! This is exactly how I would be, except it would be with cats and not dogs. I am laughing thinking of you heading off to non-existent adoption fairs......what do you and the dog do instead on your clandestine afternoons?

Just hope Jory will be laughing too!!!! We actually went to the adoption fair and I helped with the other dogs, mine just stayed with me. Tomorrow I'm actually going to work at the Pet Expo at the convention center. Jory will be at work so he won't realize the dog isn't with me!!!! After that we will go to the park!!!!
