  • Sleepers for Tiny Travelers

We're going to my parents house for Christmas, so I got out our pack n play just to make sure DS1 (25 months) fits into it. Well, he BARELY fits now and I'm sure he'll be too long by the time we travel.

Where do your young toddlers sleep when you travel? He's never once slept in bed with us, so I just can't imagine that happening for the first time on our trip. Do they make larger pack n plays for bigger kids? Buying a whole crib/mattress for their house seems like a waste...

He's probably above the weight limit for most pack & plays. We have a Shrunks travel air mattress that works great, and it's lighter than a pack & play. It blows up to the size of a crib mattress, so you can use his regular sheets to make him feel more at home.

Another option would be to go ahead and have my parents buy a cheap crib/mattress at Ikea ($138), and then take that to their cabin after the holidays are over. We'll be visiting a lot more next year during fellowship, since the cabin is only 2 hours from where we'll be, and having a crib up there would mean we wouldn't have to bring a pack n play for DS2 each time.

I'm still interested in whether there are any other toddler travel sleep options I'm not thinking of. I know a lot of people will just put a mattress on the ground, but it doesn't seem like that would work since he's still sleeping in a crib at home. I'm open to options, though...

My ds (19mo) is in a toddler bed (we ditch the crib early here) and we put him in a peapod sans mattress when we travel if it's not a baby-safe room. We'll probably purchase the blowup mattress LM mentioned for our next trip.

I never could find any good options for too big for pack n' play toddlers. My parents went ahead and bought an Ikea crib and mattress. It's been so convenient and I'm grateful they made the investment.

How big is he? N still sleeps in the pack n play fine at my parent's house and she is 40 lbs and too tall for 4T clothing. She's a little smooshed, but is comfy

Graco says to stop using the pack n play when your child is 30#, 35", or able to climb out.

Hm well she blows through that, but she knows not to climb out either which is what I'm guessing the issue is. No advice then...otherwise she was just on a floor mattress or in the king with us. Or kicked to a sibling or grandparents

I don't have one but I came across these while looking for safety gates.
                  http://www.kidco.com/products-page/peapod/

Their products are good, we have a portable seat and gates.
You can buy them on Amazon.

I have an ikea crib (only one I could reach into) and it great, hardwood, very solid.

That's what I assumed, too, although tipping might be a hazard if she's leaning over the edge?? We've had both girls in one (not for sleeping, but for containment), and it didn't spontaneously fall apart

If he isn't likely to tear apart the room if not contained, I would be uber-cheap and put a yoga mat on the floor and give him a toddler sized sleeping bag.

We got a toddler bed mattress at a consignment store and throw it in the car when we need it. But mine sleep on piles of floor blankets since they never use cribs. They'll sleep on any old pile of blankets.

I'm pretty sure a babysitter (friend of the bride at a recent wedding) thought we were HORRIFIC parents since our children were sleeping on thin floor blankets on hotel floors with towels as covers. They slept fine for the record...

I kind of wish we'd done something like that earlier so he didn't still need to be "contained" now. I can't imagine him actually staying on a mattress, but it's possible I'm not giving him enough credit. Anyway, neither of the guest bedrooms at my parents house are babyproofed anyways, so that's out.

He's just under the 30 lb mark, but his toes almost reach the end when he lays out flat inside the pnp. DH thinks he'd be fine in there, just a little smushed.

Dd is probably too big for our pack n play but she just curls up in there and is fine/happy so maybe you'd be ok for this trip.

I've heard the peapod's are good but we've never had one.

Peapod is hit or miss depending on the kid. Mine hated being enclosed in it, and they got really sweaty.
