  • Swim Lessons

I'm planning on enrolling DS1 in swim lessons when we get to CA in August. (He'll just be turning 3.) I'm wondering if there's any point in enrolling DS2 for swim lessons at the same time (he'll be 12 months), or if that's too young for babies to really get much out of it. Can a 12-month-old really learn to swim?
    Any thoughts??

We did lessons with E this summer, and it was a lot of fun. I feel like she did actually learn a lot - she can blow bubbles, kick, jump to us, and float (with help) on her belly and back. There was another girl in the class who was just over a year, I think, and she wsa more getting acclimated than learning anything, but I still think she enjoyed it. Ours were parent participation.

      Swim Lessons

All water exposure is great! It'd probably be a parent/child class at 12 months. It gives skills that can be built upon.

C has had 6 lessons and is basically swimming. D (18 mo) will start next week. We are doing the survival swimming lessons (1:1 and they have to pass a test by self rescuing fully clothed). It's amazing what they can learn. She estimates 40+ lessons for those under 2.5 but she said any exposure is great exposure at that age.

At that age, I felt like we could provide as much as formal lessons just by playing. We did some lessons that were fun, but I think the greatest benefit came from getting in the water often and seeing mom and dad go under and have fun.

I am waiting, but only because I want DS1 to be the main focus.
DS2 will join our "everyone has mandatory swimming lessons" bandwagon next year.

Okay, thanks for the insights! Sounds like this might be a good idea, then. It might just depend on whether I can get us into the Saturday morning class, and whether DH can go with us.

We started dd at just over a year. I did a parent and me program at the Y and it was very helpful in getting her comfortable with the water and water safety- ways to get in the pool and out. She is now five and still in lessons but swims like a fish.
